ADDING passenger side power window door to NON power window 240 DL 200 1986

Hi,

How to hookup the power window? (my car doesn't have them originally)

I have had to replace the passenger side window on the front of my 240 DL volvo 1986. Instead of going to the trouble of replacing the glass, I just went and bought a whole door from the junkyard. The new (to me) door has a power window, I have already installed the door and there is an extra plug on it that has three pins, this I assume is for the power window, (since the other two plugs both matched from the original manual window door hookups). In the fuse box area on the drivers side there is a slot with a fuse labeled "power windows". Also there is a TWO pin socket on the metal box thinggy on the passenger side that seems to feed all the engine stuff through a hole in the firewall, anyhow that two pin socked is capped with another socket that just loops back into itself. Is that maybe the power for the power window? Anyway, since I only have one power window, can I just run power to one of the pins on the three pin connector on the door? It looks like two of the three pins have the same color coding for the insulator of the wire. I guess I don't really understand why there would be three pins for the power windows either. Wouldn't there be just one for the power, and another for the optional control from the drivers side?

Thanks in advance!

The wiring for power windows is complicated by the driver's side master control panel - which you don't have.

There may be a way for you do do it. Power for the windows comes through two fuses. Nbr 10 is energized all the time, #12 only when the key is in Position II. The #12 circuit energizes a cut-out relay, #10 powers the motors.

Thus the windows are disabled with the key not in Position II. The power for the window motors themselves flows through Fuse #10, then the cut-out relay contacts, and then to the switches.

The motor needs only two wires to work, but they must have their polarity reversable to have the window go up and down.

The three-wire connector should have wires white, red, and green. They all go to the rocker switch. There are only a red and black wire from the switch to the motor. If black is (+) and red is (-), the window opens. Reverse that, black is (-) and red is (+), the wondow closes.

Try this on the 3-wire connector: Connect the white and green wires to ground, and the red to (+). See what the switch does. If it works, run the power to the red wire through Fuse #12. If fuse #12 blows, (stock wiring has a 16A funse in #10) you will want to put in that cut-out relay. Post back if that's necessary.

The book I am checking with is the Volvo Service Manual Wiring Diagrams 240 1987-88. It applies to the 1986 model for this circuitry. You can get the book for your 1986 from 1-800-25-VOLVO.

Good Luck,

Bob

Thanks for the info!

I am in the process of replacing the engine harness. Got to get the car moving first and beings how it's winter and all here I may have to move the car for snow plow before window for passenger.

Ok, so you recommend the wiring book.

Do you know what books to get for fairly complete set. I have seen mention in other posts to a bently book of some sort. I had originally thought that I could just go and pick up an 'owners manual' but now suspect that there is one for wires, one for owners, and one for bentlys/Hayes??

So there is like three books that I should get?

Thanks again
