adding extra filter between tank and main fuel pump 200 1987

Hello, and thank you to the Brickboard for such a fantastic resource.

Until I get around to cleaning, coating or replacing my rusty fuel tank I would like to add a filter (clear type to moniter filth that gets past the mesh in-tank filter) just before the main pump. It would be easier to replace occasionally rather than doing the whole pump /filter assembly removal I usually do.

My question is, would it put undue strain on the main pump?

Only if you let it get dirty and impede the flow of fuel.

If my calclulations are correct, the fuel pump moves five times more fuel than the motor can consume at max RPM, throttle wide open. That is a lot of volume to pass through one of the little clear filters. You might want to use something more like this:
