How do I test O/D solenoid 700 1989

Hi All,
My O/D is not working on the auto (760gle v6 '89). When I press the o/d button, the O/d lightcomes on however at 100km, tacho reads round about 3400 rpm.

This leads me to believe that the solenoid on the auto is not working. It is quite a pricey part, is ther any way I can confirm that it is broken before I purchase replacement.

many thanks
Alex Dee

How do I test O/D solenoid 700 1989

Hello Alex:

Swap or resolder the OD relay first-- if the problem persists, check the OD wiring, then tackle the OD solenoid...

Good luck!

How do I test O/D solenoid 700 1989

The o/d relay can operate the light just fine, and not the solenoid. Re-solder.

Herb is right - do that, and then this:

The solenoid makes a distinct "click" when it engages. It is located on the left side of the tranny. With the engine off, key in Postion II, operating the operating the o/d button should make that "click". Have a helper operate the button while you are lying on the ground -ear towards the tranny - listening.

No "click"? It can be that the wire connected to the solenoid has its connector go bad. Disconnect and reconnect it while you are under there. Run test again.

Disconnect and check for 12volts present when amber dash arrow is OFF.

From another source, apply 12 volts to the contact on the solenoid.

Yes click? A wiring problem - look first where the wires go from the shifter well down to the tranny.

No click? New solenoid. DIY job, made easier by raising car on ramps, putting bottle jack under tranny mount cross member so that the tranny can be lowered a bit for access. OR - if you have a gear wrench, the solenoid removal may be possible without dropping the tranny. Last time I did this job, I had never heard of a gear wrench.

Good Luck,

Bob
