I'm getting a scrapping sound from the rear brakes... 200 1980

I just put new rear rotors and pads on my '80 245DL about 2 or 3 weeks ago. All has been fine until just recently.

Sometimes when I brake now, I can hear something that sounds like a brushing/scraping noise coming from the back of the car, specifically the rotors. It’s not a consistently scraping noise though. The pattern reminds me of a record scratch (you hear the noise at the same point in every rotation, but not during the entire rotation.) It’s a lot faster then a record scratch though.

Now, I've looked at the rotors from the outside (with out removing the tire yet) and I didn't see anything that didn't look normal.

Anyone have any ideas what it could be? I will be removing the tires sometime in the next could of days to have a look, but it's always good to have an idea of what I'm looking for going into it.

One other detail: When I was removing the old rotors, I damaged one set of parking brake shoes. I just ended up removing the shoes and the parts that attach them. (The cable needs to be replaced anyway, so I figured I'd just wait until I got a new cable to replace all that stuff). I don't think this is related, since the noise is coming from the opposite side of the car, but who knows?

Thanks as always.

Did mine last summer , also got that sound , turned out to be a bearing - might be the same in your situation. or maybe the keepers are worn . Just a suggestion.

Do you have new spring loaded brass clips? The part that holds the top of the brake pads in place. That brass piece can somtimes rub on the outer ring of the rotor and generate a scraping sound. since you have new rotors I would be willing to bet that everything hasnt exactly lined up and they are still adjusting to each other. after time, everything will wear down and not be an issue. For now, check the top of the rotor (non brake pad surface) and see if there is freshly ground markings and/or a worn out section on that brass clip.

Also make sure that all the pins for the pads are in place and solidly rigid. They can slip out of place and create a metal on metal sound because the loose parts are rattling and vibrating on top of eachother.

Good Luck

I'll second the loose pin idea, when I did my rotors/calipers/pads, after about 1000 miles I got a scraping noise. Turns out I _thought_ I had pushed the pins/dowels in all the way on the calipers, but they worked themselves out of one hole, allowing things (pads, spring clip) to move around a bit.
