Pointers On Changing Motor Mounts in 240

All,

It's time to replace the motor and tranny mounts on my 88 240 M47.

I've picked up the parts from FPGroton and am set for a weekend project.

Anyone have some pointers or weblinks on how to change them?

I've got the chiltons' 740 book so I'll check it out. Also, I've looked at the 740 FAQ and did not see anything.

Thanks in Advance,
/Kevin

Hi -

Hope your shade tree doesn't leak.

Do the motor mounts first, tranny mount last. Even another day.

Use ramps to get undercar clearance. Do the right motor mount first.

Cover the ground with old newspapers to catch the stuff you will be scraping off the cross member and bottom of motor mounts so you can see the nuts and bolts. Mine had about 2 pounds of stuff on the ground when I was finished scraping.

Loosen the nuts on the motor mount itself first, just a little. Then remove the nuts off the bolts holding the mount to the cross member. Lift the engine just a little, 1/4 inch or so. That unloads the mount assembly.

Loosen or remove the nuts on the mount. Remove all the bolts holding the mount brackets to the crossmember and the block. Now the whole assembly should be removable.

Left side is a little different, easier IIRC, as the mout could be removed without taking the bracket off the block.

For the tranny mount you will have to drop the tranny crossmember. Another job of scraping off road stuff, more old newspapers. Loosen the nuts a little while the mount is still in place. The tranny doesn't have to be lowered very far. Too far and the back of the camshaft cover will hit the firewall.

Get a Haynes book, too. Good Pictures. Look on eBay, there's usually a few.

Here's one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2442630596&category=6762

It really is a long long URL, no spaces.

Good Luck,

Bob

Do a search on this site using motor mounts as the search subject. Lots odf stuff here. Don't apply any jack pressure to the oil drain plug!!!
