What the hell is a pitman arm nut ???

GENTLEMEN AND LADIES

I have movement in the steering gear drivers side only. The movement is in the steering gear only. Everything else is tight. I have replaced most of the front end already. My leak assed Chilton book speaks about adjusting the pitman arm to specifications. What the book does not tell me is where to locate the pitman arm. Already looked in the archives, but could have missed the hint I need to fix this. Is this a simple adjust, could life be that simple? My car is a 1987 245 with 210K miles.

Thanks

Dale

make certain that your problem is not the steering coupling that attaches to the shaft just above the steering rack. it would connect the column to the rack. this is fairly common and can usually be felt or seen by turning the steering wheel back and forth lightly(just free play)with engine off. you can sometimes hear it

Take your Chilton book to the nearest dumpster and toss it in.
See if you can find a green manual from the factory or a Bentley book.
To the best of my knowledge your car has Rack&Pinion steering and
probably does NOT have a pittman arm.
If steering is sloppy look at tie rods and tie rod ends, also the steering
column/shaft where it has joints in it.
Lower Support arm bushings could also be bad.

THe books is on its way to the trash I will get a good one. The outer tie rods have been replaced in Jan 2003. When I slid back the plastic protective sleeve and moved the wheel and the movement accompamied with a knocking sound is inside the unit where the steering column pinion gear housing. Is there any adjustment to this unit.
