Front speaker grills. Getting them off. 200

Happy holidays everyone.

I have a nice Blaupunkt receiver on the way for our 89 245. It has the original stereo and it's been dying for a while.

Going to upgrade the speakers too and wonder how to get the front grills off. Do they just pry off with a screwdriver?

Thanks

Ron

I agree with OliverG. Remove the door panel. It'll give you better access and you may decide to keep the grills once the speakers are installed on the door. Clean and lube door while you're in there.

You may want to take the whole door panel off to get at the studs on the speaker grills from the back. It might be a pain in the rear but you could easily bust 'em off if you use a screwdriver to pry.
If they do break ipd sells a kit to fit aftermarket speakers in the original metal brackets and the grills too.
Good luck

It's a little tricky to replace the door speakers. The originals will be riveted so you need to be prepared to drill them out.

As I recall the speaker covers snap onto a metal piece in the speaker frame. To reuse the old speaker covers, you may need to cut out the old speaker basket and mount the new speakers in the remaining metal piece.

Also be sure there is clearance between the rear of the new speakers and the window mechanism. There isn't much clearance there. I've mounted speaker on spacers but you can't move too far out from the door panel before there is interference with the window crank. If you have electric windows, that would help.

There must be better descriptions than I'm giving. Try a search in the archives. This topic comes up fairly often.

Yep.

Best results with a flathead. I usually pry from one of the corners because sometimes the brittle little shits break. Then when ur done, they snap right back on.
