Dash Instrument lights 900 1993

My recently purchased 944T w/ 97K does not have lighted icons on any of the instruments on the dash except for the headlights and the little wedge shaped icon for the speedometer light fader. The sunroof switch, rear/mirror defroster, antenna raise/lower switch and fog light switch icons do not light when the headlights are turned on. Are they supposed to? I hope so, because it's a real pain trying to feel for these in the dark (accidentally opening the sunroof at highway speeds in a Central Illinois winter can be chilling). BTW, the little lights on the switches themselves for the defroster and the fog lights DO come on. I assume that if the icons are lighted, there is a procedure in the FAQ for accessing and changing the bulbs? Thanks.

These switch lights were a mystery to me on my 93 960 for a long time.
The switches on either side of the steering wheel are lit by a clear plastic light pipe, using a single bulb. One pipe per side.
The bulbs are dealer only, but they only cost a few dollars each.
They can be accessed by removing the lower plastic panel (upper footwell) beneath the steering wheel.
Use a flashlight and you should see the lighting arrangement. Long nose needle pliers are handy here.
At least on the 960, the headlight switch has two bulbs, one for the rheostat (dimmer) and one for the circular switch, again dealer only.
After all this, my dashboard was lit up like a Christmas tree. Lovely!

Dan

FYI

I recently went to a pick-a-part junk yard and got a fist full of assorted dash/switch lights for my 1993 940 for $5.00 (with a fuel gauge thrown in). They all worked. Beats $7 each at the dealer.

If you are reasonably handy, you can replace the bulbs with a Radio Shack part. Carefully remove the burnt out bulb from the plastic base & replace it with the RS bulb. Do a search and various threads should pop up discussing this topic over the past year, one of them lists the RS #.

Your bulbs are gone, or the connections are dirty. REmove the panel (see the FAQ) and change some bulbs to find out. These are special bulbs, available (sorry!) only from the dealer.

I'm going through the same process right now too, for my 940, there is 1 lamp that does both the sunroof and defroster switch, another does the headlight switch, and another does the fog light & antenna switch. They are all the same lamps, and they are almost $12 ea. from my local dealer.
I also have to replace the heated seat switch lamps and the shifter indicator lamps, anyone know how difficut it is to do those, and what lamps they take (my dealer really wasn't a lot of help finding any of these).
Thanks

Shift indicator lamp 900 1993

The shift indicator lamp is kind of a PITA... hope you have long, skinny fingers! On the up side, it's a bulb you can get at the auto parts store... so you can save getting clipped at the dealer for another day. Excellent instructions in the FAQ.

I just went through this with my 1992 960 wagon. Your local dealer must be charging you more than list. Try Stamfordvolvo.com. They charge $6.35 for the bulbs that are assembled in the black plastic bayonet bases used over the rocker switches. The bulbs and bases used in the headlight switch pop out and those bulbs come out of their base and are miniature bulbs available at most autoparts stores.
