240 Motor Mount Failure 200

Gentlemen

I believe that I traced the moaning noise under my car to drive shaft mis-alignment caused by bad motor mounts. What is the life of motor mounts?
Anything else that I should replace when I am in there? I will look in the archives for directions for the job. The car just went over 205 K miles. Engine and tranny still strong. The car is worth the money to keep it going.

Thanks

Dale

Do the motor mounts, use the Art's Lift machine. It works, I have the one that Dick Reiss built - he no longer has any 240s. went to his place and picked it up.

Do the transmission mount after the motor mounts. It is what keeps the engine from moving rearward, so when it fails the motor mounts are under additional stress. New motor mounts will help keep the engine from moving back while you change the transmision mount.

Good Luck,

Bob

Bob

I am scrounging for the material to build the lift. A couple of quick questions. First how much lift is required to do the job? Second how much weight will I be lifting.

Thanks

Dale

Dale,

You might also want to check your transmission mount as well.

The motor mounts are really quite easy to replace with the right tools. There are a few ways to lift the engine...when I did the job, Art Benstein (a well respected board memeber) replied to my BB posting with this tool: Art's Engine Hoist it's the picture to the right of the screen. Kinda hard to see in the picture because it's small... Anyhow I bought everything from Home Depot including:

* Clothesline hook (long hook that has 6" of threads)
* a nut to fit the threads of the hook
* a few large diameter (~1") washers
* the metal framing bar that you can see in the picture (not sure what it's called, I found it in the electrical section where they sell lamps and stuff)
* a hacksaw to cut the bar to a more manageable size.
* two sections of 2x4 lumber cut to ~4 feet in length

Lay the 2x4 sections along the length of the fender, they will rest on the strut housing and prevent the metal bar from coming in contact with the fender. The rest of the tool set up is pretty much self explanatory. One side at a time: Remove the three nuts that hold the lower bracket to the front cross member, raise the engine, remove the bolts that hold the top bracket to the engine block, remove the whole assembly (mount + two brackets). Replace mount and re-install. Some people have done the job with only removing the lower bracket, I found it easier/faster to remove both.

If I remember, both sides took me about an hour. Good luck!

I'd replace the transmission mount along with the engine mounts. It's possible that the moaning noise is caused by the drive shaft support bearing. Try a search in the archives on that and compare symptoms.
