Does anyone know if the cruise control "brain" of a '91 740 (with the 12 wire connector)can be adapted to an '89 740 (with the 8 + 1 wire connectors). The only 740 at the pick & pull with cruise is unfortunately a '91.

I don't think so: the diagnostic capabilities changed over the years and several different units have been used. Hollander's Interchange Manual (at the junkyard) may have some information on interchangeability.
