Headlight Lens removal 900

The lens on my wife's 940GLE wagon seems to have a film build-up on the inside, affecting the brightness of the light. Is it possible to remove the lens for cleaning? Any DIY info in the archives?

Thanks for all your input. It sounds like the effort will not be worth the result. The film is visible but not heavy so I am going to look for a higher intensity bulb to compensate. Thanks everyone!

Hi Bud, I do not think you will improve anything by uprating the bulbs I tried this to no avail. Mine had a cracked lens (Glass ) it is not such a problem to change over, the problem is trying to clean the reflector (chrome) be very careful for it will remove very easily, water and a Camel Hair Brush, if the chrome comes off then it is a NEW Lamp. BEST OF LUCK.

You can remove the outer lens but it's a real pain to put back together and have it look right. I got tired of my crappy, yellowing headlights and bought a set of aftermarket off of ebay cheap. They were worse than the originals as far as light pattern. I wouldn't let my wife drive it until I bought another new set of the proper Volvo Cibie lights. I should have done that first and saved money. Lesson learned. At least the lights look like new again, so much better I ordered the parking light lenses too because they looked shabby in comparison.

’95-940 I had removed the single head lamp housings from the car and cleaned the housings without separating the lens from the housing. I used a distilled water/alcohol wash through the vent holes. The lens is actually a double lens. Warning, plastic and clips and assemblies break very easily. I got about a 30-40% improvement but it’s not even close to a new housing. I attribute some of the yellow inside the housing to that hideous pine pollen. Instructions are in the FAQ

If you have the ones with the foglight next to the headlight - as on a 940 turbo, or late 760, or early 960 - like this:

...it is possible to remove the lens. The lens is glued to the reflector with silicone-sealant type stuff, and will be pretty tough to remove, but you can do it.

I don't know if the wider 940/late 740 headlamps can be opened up the same way, though.

On the european setup with three bulbs the lens is removable.
I don't know about the US version.
