which turbo to use 200

This spring I'm doing some upgrades to my 91 240 the first of which is to add a b230ft engine from a 7series car which I've got on the way. The only thing is it doesn't have a turbo. So I'm looking to find out what turbo I can bolt to it that will fit the exhaust manifold with little to no modification. The only addition to this is that no matter what the turbo can not be nor will not be a garrett T3. I don't care what size T3 it is, this is not an option. I tried asking this at turbobricks but for some reason they can't seem to get past the concept of someone wanting to use something else. Basically I want something that will continue to allow me to modify the engine and make it faster and I'm sick of hearing about the T3. If anyone has any other suggestions I'd like to hear them and thoughts would be appreciated. Just nothing on the T3 please. -Russ

What i'd recommend is to try and find the turbo + kit, that'd give you about 20 more horsepower right there, and like i said earlier, it's with the T25, so i suppose you could put a bigger turbo on it (T3 or something) and get more power. Now remember that i neither now own, nor have i ever owned a turbo volvo, it just seems that what i've said above is a pretty logical and simple solution (also, you could do the above and then start upping the boost on a T3)

Your kidding right?

Not the T3?, you say you want better mid range and top end, yet you don't want the T3?
The Mitsu turbos were a bottom end to mid range turbo, with mods they can be flowed for better mid range, as for the T25, forget it if you want top end, they are a very small turbo, designed for the least amount of turbo lag.

Do you have any idea just how many diffrent trims you can get for a T3?, out of all the Volvo turbos it has the ability to work over the largest range while still being a bolt on fit.
And you say you don't want a T3?, even though your asking for the exact power range that a T3 will give you?

The larger mitsubishi turbo fitted to the earlier 700s is a TD05-12B; later cars('90 on) use a TD04.
The exhaust manifolds, at least the wastegate housing part, are different between the manufacturers.

The other turbo's that came on the B230FT were the Mitsu TD-05 (it was the alt. turbo for the 1989 780, the other was the Garrett T3) and the Mitsu TD-04H (the alt. turbo for the B230FT+, the other turbo was the Garrett T25). The turbo+ kit was on the 1991 780T and gave 188hp and 206lb/ft. As i recall, the Mitsu's had more low end power, spooled up quicker, but i'm not certain about this. Hope this was of some help.

From what I've read the mitsu turbos aren't as powerful as the garretts, any idea how the garrett T25 compares, that one could be of interest. Mostly I'm looking for something that will help more with mid range to upper end speed and it doesn't have to be anything that appeared on a volvo just something that will bolt on with little effort, mostly I don't want to have to fabricate a new manifold but I will modify an older one a little to make something fit. Thanks for the answers so far.

The T25 is small. It will not even have the top end of a T3 that came on a Volvo.

I suggest you figure out what you want, and what turbos can accomplish your goals. Ruling out the T3 series seems to be an uneducated decision.

Garrett GT series turbos are good but expensive. Holset turbos are big & cheap. Check ebay, I bet there are lots of turbos for sale.

I suggest you do a little more research before being so *sure* of your decision.

I have to agree with Michael, the T3 should not be ruled out. It is cheaper to find, cheaper to upgrade and more DIY friendly. I don't get where people get off ruling out a very good turbo because he/she was tired of someone referencing them. People suggest a decent turbo to help you out that is excellent, and very cost effective.

FWIW, in my personal experience, the garretts seem to last longer in any condition.
