New rotors - still shimmies - what did I do wrong? 700 1992

Hi guys
On the 92 wagon, I replaced the rotors with the best NAPA had to offer. It was shimmi-ing really bad. Well, it is better, but still has some shimmy. I did not replace the pads.

I noted that when I put the rotors on, tightened them down with the wheel pin, there was a bit of in and out when I turned them. I repositioned the rotor, and it was better. I was thinking that there might be something lodged about one of the wheel lugs - up near the bearing unit, but did not really see anything.

This is an ABS system. Any ideas? Maybe the 'machined' rotors that NAPA gave me were not machined straight.

Thanks

Most likely bushings, but also look to see if there is rust onthe hub between the rotor, if so , sand it off smooth and see if it makes a difference.

could be out of round tires. i've got that problem at over 75 mph cruising speeds.

How are your strut rod bushings?
In my experience, they're more likely the cause of "shimmy".

Would strut rod bushings cause a popping in turns when - like pulling out of parking places? I have noted that it has done this - more since I put larger tires on.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, a bushing would make a popping sound if it was getting pinched or rubbing and resisting.

Does the sound happen when turning sharply at low speed? Like going over the bump out of a parking lot? Does it sound like its coming from the wheel well?If so it's probaably the shock mount bvearing or whatever its called... the bearing that sits at the top of the strut tower and assists in turning, etc. When it goes it makes that popping sound as you turn, especially over gentle rises at slow speed. I think when its bad it lets the strut swim a little bit, and that might be the source of shimmy at high speeds since even small play would be exagerated.

I've been having some shimmy now and again and i think its that. I got my rotors and pads replaced because I figured it was them too... it got better but didn't disappear (the rotors needed to be replaced anyway).

good luck,
rt

Yes, my popping is exacly as you describe. I do not have shimmy at speed, tho. It is only when I apply the brakes. I say that, but I really need to get it back out on the highway at speed now that I have replaced the rotors. Will check that out.

Thanks for all the info. Good luck to you, too.

rotors have an oil glaze on them that needs to be removed with degreaser. if your pedal is pulsing this is probably the problem

Would that be why it seems that the pads are grabbing, then less, then more - pulsing ?

yes. I had this happen on a town car of mine. ABC auto had the cheep rotor cost [$29@] I did not de-glaze. Even after removing and whizwheeling the rotors the damage was done. I had both rotors resurfaced and the problem was gone. Don't forget to resurface the pads. Hope it helps Joe
