M40 to M41 change. 120-130

When I install an overdrive into my ’68 122 I wonder if I will be able to:
1. use the same cross member as I now have holding up the M40, and,
2. use the same little speedo gear as is now installed in the M40?
(are those gears color coded in some way? – seems I recall a few different colors)
As always, Thanks.

The cross members are identical on an Amazon twixt M41 and M40. As for the speedo gear it depends on the heritage of the M41 is it a D type or a J type, what did it come out of?

If its a D type out of a P1800 the only option as far as the gear is concerned is the little black one, none of the other versions will mate with the drive.

Agreed...yes on the crossmember. Shoudl work fine... an advantage over the 140 series which used a different crossmember for the O/D equipped cars.

The speedo gear... no, as said I dont' think it'll fit. Best would be if you know where your transmission came from, as I believe the different gears are that way only for different rear end ratios. If you car has the same ratio as the donor car, you should be fine.

If the M41 - with a long gearlever - is out of a 1971 140, what modifications would have to be done to the 140 crossmember to fit it to a 1966 122S? I am considering using this gearbox which is out of a car I used to own, so a known factor.
Thanks for your help.

You don't use the 140 crossmember, you use the M40 crossmember currently on your car.

2. No, the gears are different.
They are quite a bit bigger on the OD.

1) Yes, absolutely. But get a new transmission mount that's made for OD -- it's a bit more heavy duty than the standard M40 mount.

2) Don't know. Remove both and compare; it's easy to extract the gears without disassembling anything else.
