I've got an 89'240 SEdan, and whenever I brake, the steering wheel shakes/vibrates. Can anybody tell me why and how to solve the problem? Thanks fellow Bricksters....

Steering Wheel Vibrates 200 1989

hey there, to put in my 2 cents worth here....

I have had the same problem, mine was caused by the inner tie rod balljoint was totalled...this thing had play out the ying yang.....in and out up and down, fwd to back....when i would brake the damn thing would vibrate somthin fierce!!!! I thought it was brakes too, but it wasnt, so check around under the car up front... Good way to tell is shake the wheel on the ground, if you can move that wheel pretty easily and alot to clank with all that Volvo weight over the top of it, somthings wrong...

Robert

If if just happens when you brake, sounds like warped brake rotors. You would need to replace them. Don't have them cut. That's only a temporary fix, and you'll end replacing them anyway.

Good Luck,
Tom

most probably is a sudden unbalance in your wheels, or loose wheel lug nuts.

or very unhavy wear of one wheel on one place on the weel

perhaps also a very worn out steering house, but i think not so likely

when you brake, do you also feel the brake pedal pulsate? if so, it's probably warped brake rotors, otherwise it may be unbalance wheel......

How easy it is to replace the rotors myself? What are the steps involved?

Definitely get a Bentley's manual. It will pay for itself over and over. Also, The 700/900 FAQ procedure is close enough to guide you.

it's actually quite simple, but first I would recommend you purchase the Volvo "Bible" by Robert Bentley (~$40). Detailed instructions are provided with pictures. Essentially, you need to raise one side (at a time), remove the wheel (5 lug nuts), remove the caliper (1st removing brake pads), and removing rotor (on screw holding it in). This is over-simplified as there are many steps to removing the caliper. One thing to keep in mind is to correctly torque all the lugnuts otherwise you will end up warping your rotors again.

The rotors themselves cost about $50 each and the entire job (both front rotors) will take about 3 hours (at a leisurely pace). good luck!
