Rear Brake Pad Replacement 200

Decided to do my rear brakes for the first time today. I got the wheel off and looked at the brake, does the caliper "swing" out away from the rotor? If so, which bolts to undo? Secondly, to remove the pads, do you tap out the two pins like on the front set? I was wondering because the pins are much smaller and seem like they'd be harder to put back in.

Rear Brake Pad Replacement 200

I was replacing the pads on both rear brakes as well as the left rotor. The rotor was grooved and ate up, no wonder why it ate the old pads so fast. Thanks for all the advice.

If it's just pad replacement, you don't need to move the calipers. Else, two bolts at the back hold the caliper in place. If you are replacing the rotors then unbolt the caliper and hang it off to the side.

"do you tap out the two pins like on the front set?"
Yes. First check to see if there are any thin hairpin-like clips that go through the pins and prevent them from falling out.

A pair of Vise Grips can come handy if pads difficult to pull out. New pin can be used to tap out the old ones.

No bolts. No swing.
Yes, just tap out the pins and remove the pads.

Hey Rob,

You do not have to remove the caliper if you're just replacing the pads. All you have to do remove those two pins and watch out for the retaining " t " because it is under tension and wiggle the old pads out. If you're replacing or turning the discs, then you will have to pull off the caliper and do it very gently so the brake line doesn't bend. There are two 17mm bolts holding the caliper on.
If the pins are rusted or pitted, I would reccommend a hardware kit and probably two of them seeing that if one side is shot the other is either near replacement or overdue.
A tip for removing the pins is to use a punch and gently (with a hammer) tap the pins out.

Have fun and expect the worse
