Rear deck speaker grilles 1986 740 sedan 700 1986

Hi folks,

I'm looking for info on the rear deck speaker grilles that came with the '86 740 sedan.

The grilles in my recently acquired 740T have bits of fabric (?) attached to them. Whatever was there originally appears to have disentegrated. FWIW, it looks like the same thing happened to the speaker cones!

Is there a source for replacement grilles? Or suggestions for restoring the original grilles?

Thanks in advance and happy holidays to all!

Joe

Hi Joe!
I think you might be able to replace the fabric with some light weight speaker grille cloth. You might find it at Radio Shack. I had the speaker problem with my recently acquired 780. My grille cloth is borderline but I've thought some about it. If yours is like mine, It has a backup piece fot the fabric that is held on by washer like clips on a plastic stem. There may be a trick to getting them off but I don't know it. You must be careful though or you will break the stem and have nothing to hold it on.

My speakers were also disintegrated into powder but I now have Infinity Kappa 6 x 9 3 way speakers and they are nice. Maybe someone will tell us more so we can both replace the fabric.

Blessings!
Patrick

Hi Patrick,

I pulled the grilles yesterday, and it looks like the fabric was glued on (I didn't see any evidence of a retaining clip to keep the fabric on).

I'll check RS for grille cloth.

Thanks!

Joe
