89 240 idle too high when in park or neutral 200 1989

Car starts up fine and idles great when in any gear.. but when switched to park or even neutral the rpms go way up to around 2000. the car also seem to be running too rich since the plugs get fouled very fast. If you can give me anywhere to start that would be good.. ive heard Idle air control or throttle position switch and even temperature sensor??? tell me what u think.. thanks

If the fuel pressure regulator fails it could cause both the plug symptoms and the inability to control idle. There should be some codes set in the diagnostic unit. Smell the dipstick for fuel, check to see it isn't overfull, and with the motor off check the vacuum line connected to the fuel pressure regulator for signs of fuel. It's a place to start. You could follow up with a look at the codes as decoded here,

89 240 idle too high when in park or neutral 200 1989

I just solved a high idle problem on my 740 today. I thought it was the TPS, but it turned out that the linkage between the throttle cable and the Throttle body just wasn't allowing the throttle to close quite completely. So if you decide to look into the TPS, try this first.

Disconnect one end of that little rod that goes from the Throttle body up to the pulley the throttle cable moves. It has a socket on each end that goes over a ball. To disconnect, take a small screwdriver and pry out the little plastic catch at the end of the rod then the socket can be popped off the ball. In my case, with that rod disconnected the idle slowed right down because the throttle could now close completely and the TPS could sense that. Turns out that rod can be adjusted by screwing those socket ends out.

You need to disconnect this rod anyway if you are going to remove the throttle body and you really can't work on the TPS without removing that, so stop at the point of getting that rod disconnected and restart the car. You might be done in five minutes like I would have if I had been smart enough to do this BEFORE before removing and reinstalling!

I don't think this problem could explain your plug fouling, but I wanted to pass the tip along.

sounds like the idle air control valve more tan the temp sensor or the TPS. Try it by uplugging it and checking to see if the idle changes at all. All it probably needs a good clean.
Here's alink to testing the TPS
