Where's the heat? 700 1989

I cannot get any, very needed heat from my brick. In these freezing New England temps. my brick can't get warm. The temp gauge on dash does not get much above low temp line (normally 1/2(12 o'clock) during warm months) I am not sure whether this leads to no heat in passanger compartment. Do I need to replace themostat? Just had to replace leaking radiator(Dec.), does this have anything to do with it? I would appreciate any help.
If it is the thermostat, how do I replace it?
Thanks
Rob

First thing I always check in a no heat situation is coolant level...second is temp gauge...if the thermostat is working the engine should reach almost normal temps after a while...

Changing the thermostat is pretty straight forward follow the top hose back to the engine... 2 bolts...new one in like the old one out... if there is a little hole in it or a wiggly thing it goes at high noon..

My sympathy to you folks in the north east...my family is all in northern Maine. Mom says she saw two brass monkeys hitchhiking south.

I've had a minor coolant leak in my wife's 88 740, typical thing at the top waterpump seal, and I've been meaning to get to it, blah blah blah.... when it's low anyway, no heat. Top it up (only perhaps 1 or 2 quarts) and instant heat. Burp the system a couple times by slowly squeezing the top radiator hose, and it's all set.

You could also have a bad thermostat- don't rule that out. They're easy to change, and only cost $11 from FCP Groton. Go with the factory temp 92°C unit.

Good luck and try to stay warm... I spent a good portion of last night outside at work and I can verify that the cold is deadly. (And I've probably burned 1/2 tank of gas this week warming up the car).

I assume your cooling system is topped up, so let's feel the upper radiator hose to see if it's hot or even warm. If not, it sounds like your thermostat could be stuck open. You can pull it out and lose very little coolant. Also, keep in mind in -10 F weather you'll need to drive the car more than 10 minutes to get real heat, i.e. it will take awhile to warm up.
