I have a 89 780 with IRS and the car is very load when it is driving and under load. The exuast has been replaced but the noise seems to be exaust related somehow. The car has 231k on it and the rear shocks and springs are original. The tail end of the car is sitting low and I know Nivomats tend to do that and it also does not help since it is 10 degress out right now. I feel that the exaust may be hitting the underside of the car since it is sitting so low and causing the exaust noise to be transfered to the body and making it so loud. Any imput would be appreciated.

Years back I had an 89 740 that drove me nuts with noise on the highway at speed - that sounded like exhaust, but was not. It was a drone from the drivetrain. I replaced both motor mounts and trans mount to start, as the motor was almost touching the crossmember. That made it better, but it was still loud, and the exhaust - though not perfect - was not the real problem.

I did sell the car before I got it straight ...but, I was told that the rear end can get ...low, the yoke pitched up or down, and it would make the noise I was hearing at speed - from the driveshaft & rear u-joint.

Recently my 940 Turbo had a noise that sounded like exhaust. Since the exhaust was fairly new, I thouhgt it might be the exhaust manifold. It ended up that the pulley bearing on the timing belt tensioner had seized and thrown the timing off.

Cracks on backside of exhaust manifold are very common.

The manifold was replaced 2 years ago with a 90+ manifold which has a Mitsu turbo on it. Have you seen them crack as easly?

If you have gotten over 200,000 out of your original Nivomats, that is incredible! I just replaced mine at 160,000 and the springs had been weakened from the bad shocks. On most of my Volvos there is some rattle when I take off, especially with weight in the back seat or trunk. That usually stops when you get up to speed. I can't say that new shocks would eliminate the problem but I think you need them and they will probably help some. Maybe others will have more info.
