Bad Engine Wiring Harness, What Years Were Affected? 200 1989

Used the search feature and came up with several different years for the BIO-DEGRADABLE Engine Wiring Harnesses in the 240's. Some suggested it started as far back as 85 and continued to 89, others said 86-90, I'm confused.

My question is:

What years of the 240's were troubled by the bad wiring harnesses?

The reason I ask is becasue a neighbor of mine has a nice looking 89 240DL and it has been sitting in front of their house for sometime now. They have newer cars and thus the 89 240 was being used by a brother for a while. From the info I gathered he is done using the car (bought something newer) and I would like to jump on this chance of buying that 240 before it flies away.

If all the ducks fall in a row then maybe I will be able to add a 89 240DL besides my 79 264GL. I always wanted more childern. Thanks for everyone's time.

Sincerely,

Bad Engine Wiring Harness, What Years Were Affected? 200 1989

The crumbling insulation problem exists only on the wires from the gray connector on the firewall. Insulation problems occur on other wires due to engine heat, road oil and grit, and other problems.

The crumbling insulation problem began with the LH fuel management system in 1983 and was finally ended in the 1988 model year.

Other problems, suchs as failure in the under-the-engine-front harness, are still extant.

Corrections and additions are welcome.

REagrds,

Bob

This may be a bit of a tangent, but wasn't there a major change in the level of electronics in '85 and newer cars? I was told to avoid '85 and up 240's through the mid 80's for this reason.

Any info will be appreciated.

Cheers,

Jaak

Change in 1985, what was affected? 200 1989

This may not be a total or precise list,, but.....

Body style was unchanged, same as 1983 1n3 1984
Engine changed to B230F
Fuel management changed to LH 2.2, still similar to LH 2.0 from 1983-84
Crumbling insulation problem unchanged.

Maybe some other changes.

In 1986 came the body stye changes.
New trunk lid and lock integrated with central locking.
High-level brake light.
Change in tail light units and circuit boards.
New front metal "A" pillar forward.
Rear fog lights, dash switch controlled but on only with low beams.
Relay to cut off headlights when ignition switch removed.
New front seat head rests, same as in 700 Series.
That's all I can think of right now.
B230F only engine offered.

Regards,

Bob

I think it was 80-87 that had the bad ones. Check Dave Barton's website for more info. Good luck.
