Is my 745 an 'SE'? 700 1991

I was trying to see what speakers would fit my '91 745 Turbo on Crutchfield, and they list as one of the models "740 Turbo SE". How do I tell if mine is an SE, or were all the turbo models that year SE? What distinguishes an SE from other models? Thanks.

The 745SE was sort of a test bed for the 945T/960. Most everything that came in the 9 series showed up on the 7xxSE.

generally, the 740SE came with practically every option known to man, or at least to volvo for the 740 line. The biggest telltale sign of any 740se is the bodykit. Also, they were all turbocharged and came with a Turbo+ boost controller. I believe a glass moonroof was included, as well as electric seats, power windows, locks, heated mirrors, heated seats etc.

Well, I guess mine is just a normal regular 740 turbo cuz I don't have all those gizmos, just some of them. I am thankful I don't have Nivomats - a lot less trouble and cost. Thanks.

Hey Darius!
You're still trying to get those speakers?

The SE designation should make no difference in what speakers fit your car. Crutchfield gives a short list for you. You can go with other speakers; it will just take some modification. Usually the depth is there but speakers such as the Infinitys need more width at a greater depth.

This is what I have done. Remove the door panel and cut around the speaker opening in the door perpendicular to the hole with tin snips. Then bend back the tabs you have just created. Spray some paint on them to keep them from rusting. If you want, put some Dynamat over the rough edges.

You can usually make the opening big enough for the better speakers. I have done it on three of mine.

Let us know what you end up doing!

Blessings!
Patrick

Hi Patrick - I took your advice and indeed, the wires are there. I presume that they are attached to the wiring harness that was connected to the external amplifier. What I will do when the weather gets a little warmer is take the CD/receiver out and disconnect the dash speakers and connect the front door wiring and put new speakers in there, 5 1/4, I believe. Not an urgent necessity, but something I will find enjoyable to take care of when I can find the time.

The dash speakers can just sit there, after that. I hope this works out - the dash speakers have excellent high-end sound, so I don't want to end up with too much bass. We will see. No big deal. Too bad the dash speakers aren't easily replaceable.

Bless you, and thanks.

Darius

I don't know about the US-spec SE, but the UK-spec 740SE was (I think) only available with the B200F engine (With either manual or auto transmission) and included, amongst other things: velour trim, electric/heated mirrors, four electric windows, electric steel sunroof, central locking, a loadspace cover (On wagons), the Volvo CR-702 stereo with four good speakers, electric aerial (On sedans) and black exterior trim instead of stainless steel. Not a bad spec, even today- I think 'SE' in this context means Special Edition.

How do I know that the 740SE comes with all the above? I own one! :)

James,
Are you sure your 740SE has a B200F ?
The ones I have seen, including my late 1990, are the B200E ( K Jet injection).
Mine is specced as you say + it has full leather upholstery which was an option.
The SE models were, as someone said a high spec. last fling for the 740, But based on different base models in different markets, pity we in the UK didn`t get the turbo!!

Colin.

Yes. The label on the cam cover says B200F, which Haynes says is the one with continuous FI (L-Jetronic?), as opposed to the K-Jetronic set up.

The car is a 1990 model, registered in September of that year, built in Belgium and has the engine number (Original engine) of 0000000000859.

Puzzling...

Hi James,
Yes it gets even more odd.
Mine is first registered earlier than I thought, in June 1990, built in Sweden
Ch No 1490504 Eng No 7759.
May be yours being Belgian built made a difference, possibly for a differrent market.
I would not have thought Volvo would make such a fundamental change in the middle of a model year.

Colin.

I presume that it's a UK model as it was first registered By Lex Volvo in Colindale, North London.

The only things I can think of are that the B200F was either phased in during 1990 or it is an 'automatic transmission only' engine.
