At local stores (Autozone, PepeBoys) I see
ProLine (2 to 3 USD)
Fram (4 to 5 USD)
STP (3 to 4 USD
Bosch (5 to 6 USD)
Mobil 1 (11 to 12 USD)
Cheapest is ProLine at 2 to 3 USD.
They all look the same externally and feel the same in terms of weight except for Mobil 1 where you can really feel that it is heavier. Mobil 1 oil filter seems to be designed to be used with synthetic oil.
Now you can also order online from FCP and the like your Mann oil filter.
Since oil is changed so frequently every 3K miles, is there really a big difference in using one filter versus another?
Which oil filter do you use?
Thanks in advance for the recommandation.

Always Mann filters. Always.
I always change the oil every 3000 miles. No more then that.
I don't know about everyone else, but the instruction book that came with my '80 245 says to change the oil every 3000 miles... So far it's yeilded 425K miles, so I think I'll stick to every 3000 miles... heh heh heh...
This happens when you never miss an oil change:

I personally would rather walk than put FRAM on any of my cars. Junked a FIAT with one 20 years ago and haven't used one since. Mann or Wix for me. I have read that Purolator is a fairly decent part so if I was REALLY in a bind I might use one. I have three Volvos on the road and use lots of filters. I really like Mann air filters also. Anyway,I buy the Mann filters 10 at a time from FCP. Later, rcs

NOt really sure what everone has against changing there oil at 3k? Yes your car could make it to 200k easy draining at 5-7k on dino oil, but what if you could get to 500k easy by jsut changing at 2500 to 3k?
Always use MANN or volvo labeled filters

If you are using cheap oil, and draining at short intervals, then go ahead and use an inexpensive filter.
If you are using a premium oil, (safely) extending the drain interval, then use the filter which will remove the most small particles (and hold the most without interfering with oil flow).
All wines of the same color look pretty much alike from the outside. Taste will vary significantly.
Of the filters you listed, my choices would be exactly reverse to the order you show.
I use AMSOIL filters. If I couldn't, or wouldn't, then I'd use the Mobil 1.
But then, I run AMSOIL engine oil with extended drain intervals.

Hi Dick,
I found an Amsoil online store.
Just curious...
Which oil grade do you use from Amsoil?
Which oil filter?
How often to change your oil?
Thanks.

I use AMSOIL Series 2000 0W-30 in my two Saab turbos, my Volvo turbo, and my Dodge van. I'm willing to pay the extra $10 a year per car because I know it is better oil.
I use the SDF 57 oil filter, same as used by most Saabs, because it fits and give more room than the OEM replacement filter.
Change oil yearly, filter at 6 months. In my turbos, that is about 10,000 miles a year. In the old days, when I drove more and had fewer cars, I changed every 25,000 miles, with filter change at 1/2 that (or 6 months).

For turbos, I thought Amsoil recommended extending the oil change only 3x your regular interval (about 10,000 miles).

Mann (Volvo) or Mobil 1. Fram should be your absolute last resort.

Go with Mann filters. I paid less than $4 each from FCP Groton when I bought in bulk. You can't do better than Mann or Volvo OE for your Volvo. Don't cheap out.

Mann filters from IPD for (I think) $30 + S&H. Since I run synthetic in all my cars, I change oil every 10k miles and change filters every 5k miles. The Volvo manual says every 5k miles (for dino oil), but there is no harm in changing oil and filter then or earlier as you do.
Cheers,
SM

I believe filter quality does make a difference. I've examined the insides of about 8 different filters and found obvious differences in quality. I'd order a case (10) of Mann from FCP and use them. I would never use one of the cheapies. Using junk filters is one of the ways the quick-lube places make their money. The Mann filter will run you about $4.20 each. I don't know for sure, but I've read that the Premium Wix filters that Car Quest and Napa sell are also good. I'm sure there are other good ones, too, but I just stick with Mann for the Volvos.

I use Mann(volvo oem filter)it has the antidrain back valve.I would use a Napa gold over any of those you listed(it too has the ADV).It is the same as a wix, which is pretty good.I used the bosch and the guy at Autozone said it had the ADV but my oil light stayed on longer at start-up.
The owner's manual states oil changes every 5000 miles, those chain lube places trick you into thinking you need one every 3000.

Personally, I will use nothing else but Volvo filters, even if I too change oil at every 5000 km (=3000 miles). They have a VERY good reputation, and having a good filter is vital.
