142 E Questions 140-160

I bought what I think is an E model 1971, automatic. Leather seats, gold color. Should the car have chrome around the rain gutters? Are the mufflers different than carb models? Yeah, right? I'm missing the emblems from the fronmt fenders, any one have any leads on where I could get them? How would the 14 inch wheels from a '75 240 work, the reason being I'm thinking that there are more tires available in 14 than 15's.

    142 E Questions 140-160

    HI,

Be careful using 14" wheels, all the ones I have tried (all different 240 rims), bolt up to the car ok but there is NO clearance between the 14" wheels and the brakes on a '69 142 so THEY SCRAPE, so I ended up using 15" 5-spokes, there are enough tyres available for 15" so I wouldn't worry.

      Yeah, but... 140-160

I've heard of this too, and it must have been a problem in the past, cause my car had 14s on it when i got it and the brakes were shaved a little bit. You can shave/file down the calipers a little bit and it should be fine. I didn't have to do it on my car, as it was already done, but can tell u from experience that i had 14" 240 series Coronas on my car, and it looked damn good. :)

    142 E Questions 140-160

I think I have a "142E" emblem stabbed into the sheet rock wall of my garage. Send me an e-mail to remind me to look. (I'm at work) It will be a few days before I can get back because I'm busy getting ready to go out of town. I don't think I will even turn on the home computer until after I get back.

By the way, I don't think finding 15" tires should be to big of a problem.

    142 E Questions 140-160

I think the injected engine's exhaust manifold is a dual outlet, therefore the header pipe would be different. Rest is probably the same. Emblems are all over ebay. If you have power steering bigger tires are okay, but I prefer the 165/15 that is a standard VW bug tire, so is carried by many discount tire shops. Easier on the ball joints also. It I could inflate them to 75 lbs, and have a .5 top gear, I'd really be happy.

"I(f) I could inflate them to 75 lbs, and have a .5 top gear, I'd really be happy."

I totally agree! :-D Well, not for when i go for drives, or want to go fast... But, have you found any that can handle any pressure at all? All of the ones that i've seen have low maximum pressure ratings... Have you found anything?

        142 E Questions 140-160

Er, why would you want to run high pressures? Roughly speaking, the most traction comes from having the greatest contact patch on the ground, with the entire patch supporting the pressure evenly. More than that bows out the center of the tread and puts the load on the center of the patch, reducing traction.

Basic mistake a lot of people do on track days is pump up the tires so they'll feel more responsive. Doesn't get you around very quick, no matter how tight it makes the handling feel. I run 27-28 psi in 195-60s -- a 165 might do well at 30-31, no more.

          Lol, 140-160

In those posts we were talking about getting maximum fuel efficiency, not performance or traction, the opposite of what is wanted for low rolling resistance. Otherwise, yeah, for my daily driver, i'll stick with the high traction stuff. And then for running different pressures, it all depends on the tires and the car and the setup. I prefer to run mid 30s normally. For example, if i were to have the factory recommended 28ish tire pressure in my parents minivan, it would scrub/roll over early and not have good traction, so i would pump it up a bit more, to firm it up; better response, and better traction. Also, if you look at what people at autocross events, they are running more than thirty psi, i've never heard of anyone running less at a track event. Also, as i said, it depends on the tire and suspension setup... Here's more info, that know a lot more than i do; :)

    142 E Questions 140-160

There should not be chrome on the rain gutters on the roof above the doors, if that's what you are talking about. Agree on the mufflers being different, but not sure why u care so much... (why?) I don't know where u can get some new emblems. 14 in wheels work fine, but why not stay 15? There have been tons of discussions on tires and what not. I'll look some up for u, just cause i don't want to do HW... Peace,
