1993 940 Radio Cleaning (CR814) 900 1993

Hi: I have the annoying problem of strong scratch/static noise when I first turn on the radio and then the driver's side speaker often just drops off. I can get it to go back on (usually) by wiggling the on/off knob which suggests to me that the radio needs to be tightened up and cleaned. Is this an easy/worth doing job? I'm comfortable with taking most things apart and getting them back again with no spare parts. Any help appreciated.
Thanks!
Scott

I took out the CR814 in my '93 940 to fix a jammed cassette mechanism. I didn't look at the volume control so I don't know if it is one of those sealed ones you can't spray cleaner into or not. Once the unit is out, it is easy to open it up. I've had pretty good luck with spray contact cleaner. Some may disagree but I like to use the type with lubricant included when I do controls. Probably goes back to the days when I fixed TVs with the old rotary tuners.

The FAQs tell how to pull the unit. As I recall, you pull both knobs on each side. If you look in you can see the latch piece which has to be pulled inward to release. See the FAQs for better instructions.

I just did the job on my CR 905 radio cassette which I believe is similar.
I removed the unit from the car, took off the lid and using an aerosol can of contact cleaner with the little tube extension fitted, I squirted some into the switch mechanism (there was a small hole in the side of the switch body), and turned the switch knob over the full range of travel back and forth 4 or 5 times. I let things dry for a couple of hours and then refitted the unit to the car and entered the 4 digit security code to reactivate the unit. Problem solved - no more static at turn on.

You may see some improvement by taking the knob off and spraying some contact cleaner in there.

If you do take the radio apart, make sure you clean anything the tape would touch while you're at it.
