Front Drivers Window Lift Channel Disconnected from bottom of glass. 200 1987

Hi: I have a 1987 240 Wagon. Auto Trans, 175,00 miles. Manual Windows (non-electric).

The front drivers window has become disconnected from the lift channel that the borrom of the glass rests in. (inside the door). I can place the bottom of the glass back in the channel

QUESTION? How does the channel attach to the bottom of the glass? Is it glued? Are there clips or screws. Thanks

Volvo dealers sell the rubber stripping needed to lock the glass into the channel. I have replaced a few of these with little difficulty. A little dishwashing detergent in some water seems to make the glass slip into the channel easier. Good luck!

This happened to me about to weeks ago, when I tried to roll the window down when it was very cold. I think there was ice freezing it in place.

I pulled the door panel off, and was surprised to find this pressed channel arrangement.

Once again it was cold, and I didn't feel like bothering with glues and cleaning. So I pushed the window to the top of the frame and aligned everything, and cranked the lift channel up under the glass until it snapped into place. It's been fine, and if it comes apart again maybe it will be warm out this time.

Good luck,

Originally the channel is attached with just a piece of rubber, and it's pressed together. The spring action of the steel in the channel pinches against the rubber strip and holds the glass. Over time the channel can weaken, or the rubber degrades, and it loses it's grip.

You can clean everything and just carefully knock it back together, but it'll pop apart in no time. I've had success by cleaning everything thoroughly and gluing it together with some windshield urethane. It's messy, and you have to make sure you get the glass aligned correctly, but it works.

BTW, Toyota Tercels from 1983-96 and 87-88 wagons were notorious about doing this, and I've owned several of those cars. The urethane trick was something I came up with to deal with the problem.
