My 142 140-160

I thought I would post and say Hi. I've been reading here for a while but never jumped in. I have a 68 142 that my Dad decieded needed to be a GT clone, after he was done with it I decieded I would buy it and try and complete.
You can take a look at http://www.pbase.com/airdaddy/142gt
I hope to have more updates over the next few monthes.

    Hi 68142GT,
Why did you fit that engine support arm? Does the engine tilt while making power otherwise?
    Cheers, Ben

IPD sells them, or they did, not sure if they still do, you might find it on their website. I got one a while ago, but then i was recommended not to use it because without support i was told that it will rip a hole through the wheel well that it is bolted up to. The engine does rocck a little bit, and with higher power engines it rocks a little more. This is just another way of keeping it more steady, which would increase the life of the engine mounts, and there would be less drivetrain rocking. I'd like to hear how it's been working for you Sean,
      How's that going for you?

I had one of those braces on my 122 for years. It never ripped a hole in the fender, but it may have contributed to a stress fracture immediately underneath where it mounted. I can't say, because that's a known weak point on pre-'67 122s anyway (Volvo began reinforcing that area partway through the '67 model year).

I also have a minor concern that it might interfere with the engine exiting under the passenger compartment in a head-on crash, which was touted as an intentional safety feature back then. Happily, I never put it to the test.

But ther real point is... why would an engine need stabilizing? A well-tuned engine in good shape does not rock. That goes for high-performance engines too, even with big cams or whatever. All the stabilizer does is mask engine problems.

Correct, it doesn't rock, but it does tend to tilt to one side due to the torque of the engine as one accelerates and then "rock" back in the other direction when you let off the gas. The stabilizer reduces these rocking motions and your drivline should theoretically be more responsive/direct (both NOT the words i'm looking for, i just forgot what i was gonna say, darnit...). Um, here's an example, if I am in neutral and hit the gas, and then let off, i can feel the car slightly rocking side to side, it is worse when driving the car because you are actually sending the torque somewhere instead of just rocking the engine. The stabilizer will help reduce these motions. And then again, so will tougher engine mounts, such as the 164 mounts, (which i didn't get when i replaced my mounts last, because i hadn't known yet of their superiority) or polyeurethane ones. (not sure who produces those though, although i'm interested in finding out who does..) Hope this helps explain,

        Also, 140-160

The sploiler is off a 240 turbo that I mounted to the bumper, I still need to paint it though. The doors are off a later model 142 But I think i will be at least swapping internal for power door locks and windows. The hood was stuffed with some insulation to clean it up.
