Hi Paul, That is a good question with no definate answer. My Moms on the hiway with cruise control set on 70 mph gets 27.6 miles to the gallon when she goes to Maine. Hers is a 92,960,101,000 miles. My Brother Steve gets 24 from Greensboro, to Richmond. My brother Danny has a 94 960, his get 25 on cruise control, I have a 95 and a 97 and they get about 24 each. I think the sedan does better than the wagon, but not by much. Hope that helps.

I have a 95 960 sedan that uses a lot of gas. I plan to have the ecu reprogrammed by a german company. Generally 10% gain in Power, 2 to 5 mpg improvement in fuel mileage Volvos are $400.00 to chip. The install takes around 1 hour, the ECU is removed, the chip is copied, sent to austria for tuning via email, and the tuned file is programmed onto the chip. This will increase horsepower by about fifteen hp. It costs about $400. Hope this helps.

I think this question is so hugely dependent on so many variables that it's almost impossible to predict what you will get with your car. You may get a sense of what to expect, at least a range, but about all you can say is that these are faily fuel thirsty cars, and you'd be silly to expect anything else, unless you've never looked under the hood. Your best estimate is what you calculate!

I can tell you that I don't closely monitor my mileage, except on the highway. In the city (downtown Baltimore) I never go about 30 mph in my stop and go 2.8 mile drive to work. So, why bother? I'm just grateful (except when I fill it up at $1.80/gal.) that it has a 20 gal, tank, so I don't have to visit the pump any more than about twice a month. Highway estimates are usually around 23-25 mpg, which includes passing over the western Maryland 'mountains', 65 pmh restrictions in Penn over disgustly ill-repaired roads, and well as wonderful cruising in WV at 70+, and on to the flat plains of Indiana and Illinois.

I am getting 19-20 in town and city traffic, get about 24-26 hightway, the city number will rise a mile or two with the spring temps.

My 96 gets 14 in town, 17 to 18 mixed driving and 22 to 23 straight highway driving. Fairly rotten, but I've resigned myself to it because it's such an utterly wonderful car to drive.
