Previously howling Volvo stalled . . . wifey really miffed! 200

Hi everyone and thanks for the suggestion to replace the center driveline shaft bearing on my howling Volvo . . . runs quiet now. But I have another problem. I take the wife out to show her how quiet the car is now (and that she shouldn't worry about driving it) and about 5 miles from home (and right after a car wash) the car stalls when driving it. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the water from the car wash. Now my wife's howling is worse than the driveline shaft bearing. It did start again as I headed home, but must have stalled 10 times. It would mostly stall when I let up on the accelerator on turns or when slowing down. This happened once before about 3 months ago when we were caught in a rainstorm - we just made it home. The next day it was dry outside and the car stalled right from the start but then about 10 minutes later ran fine; the problem has never come back since then, although I have driven in slushy wet weather. It sounds like an electrical problem caused by water and then when it dries out it's okay, but I really don't know. Anybody got some ideas? I bought the 1988 244 in October from the original owner with 78,000 miles and excellent maintenance. Thanks, Fred

Could be water on the ignition system.

Once you get it home, wash the cap, rotor, plug wires and coil wire in hot, soapy water (I toss mine in the dishwasher). Then rinse, rinse, rinse, and dry, dry, dry.

Could also be a failing fuel pump relay. You can resolder ($0) or replace (about ($40).

Resoldering costs nothing, takes about 15 minutes, has no risk, and is a clean 'n easy job. If it helps nothing, then you're out nothing.

      Foster,

My wife loves her 740 but, she would kill me for putting car parts next to her pots and serving dishes.

        Somebody clearly has priorities reversed.

My main concern is contaminating those lovely wires with spaghetti sauce.

Anyway, a bit of dirt and a few little bugs are good for you -- they build your immunities. And how bad can Volvo grease be, anyways? Certainly no worse than pepperoni grease.

My mom always told me I should rinse the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher; I'll have to tell her she was right now.

Moms can be like that, very single-minded and focused.

I bet she never gave a thought to rinsing the hubcaps before you washed 'em, though. All she cared about was the dishes, dishes, dishes....

Wives aren't much different than moms.

sounds like the dist cap is wet inside. take it off and wipe it out. then, spray wd-40, or something like, wipe the excess, install the cap and try again. good luck, chuck.
