6 cylinder engines OK?

Thinking about looking a 94 960. I have always had 4 cylinders (240, 760 and 940). Is there any reason to stay away from a 6 cylinders?

Thanks

The DOHC 6(6304F)can be an expensive engine if it hasn't been maintained. Very Important to get the maintenance history of the car your going buy and have a qualified mechanic check it out. A well maintained car should last you for many miles. There are other parts on the 960 that are expensive as well such as the IRS(Independent Rear Suspension) & ECC(Elctronic Climate Control). Check the FAQ section for this model. The prices on these have fallen IMHO because of the potential problems that exist with these cars. I have never regretted going from the 92 960(broke timing belt prematurely) to a 940SE Turbo. Others swear by their 960's and that's fine. I have no plans to buy another 960.

never break the timing belt and don't skip the bearings when they get noisy. on a 4 cyl, you only need a belt. on a 960, you break a belt and you need a loan to pay for it. otherwise, no problem, if it's been well maintained, just like any other car, for that matter. good luck, chuck.

    Hi Gary:
Well, it seems that you either get a good one or a really bad one, and generally people's experiences on the Board reflect that. I have a 960 and like it a lot, but it is more expensive to repair and maintain. I haven't really had any of the major difficulties others have had, but, truly, if I had known more when I bought it I'd have probably bought a 940 instead. Again, my car has worked well, it has a nicely appointed interior, the engine is very smooth and powerful, and it is a very comfortable car, especially for over-the-road trips. They have become very well-priced recently, and if you get a very good deal on a car that has received good care then it may make sense to buy it. Make sure you check the timing belt and change it on time.

Take a look at the buying a used 960 section in the FAQs before you buy: http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/BuyingUsed7xx.htm#BuyingaUsed960, and make sure that you have a mechanic who has 960 experience look it over before you buy.

    Hope this helps.

B30 is the greatest engine since sliced bread! Wears like iron!
    Plenty power!

Don't know about newer models. Might ask Tom Irwin......

I can echo everyones' sentiments, I like the 960 so much I bought 2.

Read & follow the FAQs, do the required maintenance and you will have a unique car par excellance`.

Do otherwise and you will pay throught the nose...I lost a timing belt (my stupid) and it was $1000 to repair ansd I did the labor myself!

      For-warned is for-armed.
