MPG 140-160

I get about 16mpg in my 1972 142E. My driving is comprised mostly of country type roads where you drive nonstop but only at 45 mph. I drive little in the city, is this right? If not, how do i preform the MAP sensor suction test (I know it is with my mouth)? How do I check the prongs on the computer under the seat? What kinda of figures am I looking for on temp sensor #1 (outside air?) and #2 (coolant?)? Is there anything else I can do to improve the mpg, these figures suck on my wallet!

    Hi Colin,

Those figures sound pretty bad, you sure there isn't a B30 under the bonnet? I am un-familiar with the early fuel injection systems but as with any tune-up process make sure all of the ignition system is operating well, including ignition advance curves as well, before you tackle the fuel delivery system.

For tuneability and aftermarket injection system would be ideal, but this may not be everyone's cup of tea.

What color are the spark plugs?

They were white last time i checked, but i did have a cooling problem then. The ignition timing, the valves, the point gap and spark plug gap are all set to factory specs. The cold start injector does not turn on when i turn the car to the on position. The point, plugs, cap, rotor are all new bosch stuff. So i figure i might need to be looking at some of the fuel delivery stuff.

Have another look at the plugs. If they are still white, that indicates a lean mixture -- but I wouldn't necessarily blame the fuel system right off.

Does the ignition timing advance when you rev the motor? Have a look with a timing light. If it's not advancing properly, economy will suffer badly. This would also make the mixture appear to be lean, at least to some extent.
