great looking 164e that i might buy.....advice? 140-160

Hey ya'll.. I'm usually in the 700 posts but there is this 164e for sale in the neighbourhood..

over the phone, i learned this :

1973 164e 6 cylinder 5 speed. ( did they make a five or is it 4 w/ OD ?)

66,000 original miles

slight rust around rear window, rear quartes and trunk base.

well maintained engine - I'll ask about the injectors, it's d -jet..

he's the 2nd owner, says car is in great running shape, ready for restoration..

I'm not too familiar with these puppies. is it an in-line 6?

what should I watch for with these cars?

Advice is appreciated!!

Josh

p.s. he's asking $2400.00 CAN for it, probably a little flexible..

Thanks..

$2400C is just too much, for anything with any rust. I got a fair 1975 164 for $10, plus the gas it took to go and get it three hours away. If you are serious about a 164, keep looking on ebay, etc.

Try to haggle with that price, but the 164 is awesome! was just able to get a great deal on ebay for a $475 164e with 120,000 miles in admirable condition, so keep your eyes open...

It's a 3-liter L6. I THINK it's a 4+OD. Check the "slight" rust, especially in the trunk/rear-quarter. A common weakness in older bricks.

Rust is NOT your friend.
Yes, it is an inline 6 with D-jet fuel injection.
M410 tranny with 4 + OD (same Laycock-DeNormanville type J OD used on other
Volvos).
2400 sounds a bit high. Is that around 16-1800 US? I've seen them
for less than 1000, in fact got one in about 1992 for 700, same car.
That was in Phoenix AZ.

It does sound a little high, not too many of them around here, so he's trying to get the money.

He drove by me about 2 weeks ago, the car looked amazing from a quick glance..

I'll definetly take a good close look at it..

Thanks! Appreciate the help! Josh

Well i have just bought a metallic blue 1973 164e for $100.00 cdn. The rust can be far reaching, check under the battery tray and the hood hinges and were the fenders meet at the front of the car. You can buy aftermarket rear wheel arches for this car really cheap ,but it is the time required to have them installed that can be horrendous. My one word of advice is make sure that you do a compression test because the cams in 73 and 74 are notorious for going flat. As you can read in recent comments how much of a pain in the ass getting a cam for these cars can be. But in the long run when it is done and your cruising at over a 100mph (not that any law abiding volvo driver would ever do that speed) you will love it.best of luck adotbdot.
