244 Kickdown cable replacement 200

I plan to replace the kickdown cable on our AW70 equipped '92 244 this weekend. In a previous post Don Foster indicated that this job might require that the exhaust pipe be removed. I HATE working with the upper exhaust system; I always seem to break something. Short of dropping the tranny, is there any way to do replace the kickdown cable without messing with the exhaust pipe? TIA! Glen

Before you replace the cable 200

Glen--

Is it just sticking in pulled-out position, so your trans won't upshift?

That happened to me a few weeks ago with my 1992. An ex-car mechanic told me "9 times out of 10" that meant the cable was frayed inside and had to be replaced.

Hmmmmm. If I worked the cable a bit by hand I could get it to retract--it would just hang up sometimes going down the road. I unhooked the sleeve attachment at the manifold so I could tilt up the sleeve a bit. Started working lubricant (gear oil with a Moly additive) down into the end of the sleeve. Reconnected it and drove the car. Did this several days in a row. Each day it worked better than before.

Now it's 100% ok. Don't know how long this is good for at 207k, but so far it's working again for $0.

Good luck.

Before you replace the cable 200

Thanks for the reply, Doug. Yeah, it's not upshifting consistently into overdrive. When I manipulate the cable by hand, it does seem to hang up a bit. I drained and flushed the tranny in an effort to fix the problem. I could kick myself for not changing the cable when I had the pan off then.

I tried dribbling motor oil into the cable, but only did it once. Not much seemed to go down the sheath. Maybe I need a less viscous oil and a little more patience!

It's GREAT to know that the cable was causing your problem.

244 Kickdown cable replacement 200

Ive replaced a lot of cables without dropping the headpipe however it does make it a bit eaiser.I use a pair of hemostats to guide the new cable on to the shift valve cam.

Volvo Tech - Thanks for the input; I was not looking forward to dropping that pipe. I have some friends who could lend me a couple of hemostats, so I might give them a try if I can't rehab my existing cable.
