740 airbag replacement 700

I recently had a minor collision where I rear-ended the left corner of a minivan's rear bumper with the right corner of the front bumper of our 1990 740 wagon. We were traveling about 10 miles per hour. The only visible damage to our car is a 6-8 inch crack in the bumper, but the airbag also was deployed. I can get a replacement steering wheel with fresh airbag from a local junkyard (Blake's Salvage, Erie, CO) for $175. Is replacing this something that should be left to a professional, or can a Volvo tinker figure it out with help from a discussion board?

Thanks - Andy

The price seems a little steep to me. I think I remember seeing $50 on the board at the local U-pull-it. It only takes a few minues to remove the air bag. Don't turn on the car with the air bag removed This will set a fault code.

Disconnect the battery, and then use a Torx bit (don't remember which size) to loosen the two screws, which hold the airbag to the steering wheel, from the backside of the steering wheel. Unplug the electrical connector, and install the new airbag. There is no reason to remove the steering wheel.

Yes there is a reason to remove the steering wheel. The contact reel must be replaced. When the airbag deploys, it melts the conector on the back side, so the contact reel located behind the steering wheel has to be replaced.
