pinging noise 700

I have a 740turbo. I got a pinging sound today. It sounded like a loose heat sheild knocking against the exhaust. I took it to a shop and he told me to take it back to where I had my alternator replaced. We called the shop that did the alt. and they said that an alt. will not sound like that. I put my ear up to the alt. and it sounds like something is hitting inside. The question is Can an alt. make noises like that.

I am a little confussed... is the noise coming from underneath the car or under the hood? If from underneath it could be the "heatshield" (rectanguliar piece of metal)which could be loose. You could try to tighten it or just remove it. As far as the alternater making a noise as you describe I have never heared of it. However it does make me wonder, do you have an internal voltage regulator? Is your charging system working?
