Popping noise from rear-end when engaging gears (manual drive) 200 1984

Hello all. I am new today to the forum. I recently bought a 1984 240 Diesel for the purposes of getting me to and from the office. I have no mechanical experience. The car has 213,000 miles. It appears to run well except for a 'popping/grinding' noise that eminates from the rear-end when one engages the transmission. This occurs in all four (+over-drive which functions intermittently) gears. There is also a slight 'give' before the car gets under-way.
I've purchased the Bently manual and am prepared to do minor work (as I have a limited number of tools). I'd prefer to have a general idea about what could be causing the problem before taking it to the local garage.
Would anyone be able to provide insight into the possible cause, please?
I've read the threads discussing the U-joints and driveshaft carrier bearings. I took the car to a quick-lube to have them change the oil and check the differential grease. They supposedly changed both. But I suspect they had difficulties.
Thanks.

Sounds like ujoints . run itup on some ramps set the parking brake, and grab the drive shaft and see if there is any play in it
If so pull the shaft as per the faq's and bring it to a machine shop to have the new jounts and center bearing pressed on.

there is a good diagnostic thread for the overdrive unitin the faq's as well.

As far as that diesel, do you know when the timing belt was last changed?

Thank you, Robert. Would it be expensive to have The U-Joints and the Center Support Bearing replaced by a mechanic? I'm afraid I would foul things up. Also, if one wanted to replace items such as seats and outside trim, how would one go about it? I thought I might be able to go to a salvage yard. I'll check into the OD. I saw a thread on which you commented. I should check the wires perhaps.

It's hard to say what a mechanic would charge in your area to do the ujoint/center bearing job . I imagine the rate is for 1.5-2 hours labour ( anywhere from $35-70 per hour depending on where you are ) + parts. If they do need replacing don't forget the rubber support for the center bearing as well while you are in there.

If you take the shaft off yourself and bring it to a machine shop to have them press the bearings/ujoints it would probably run between $6 and 10 ea for the press work

www.fcpgroton.com has new ujoints for $8 ea center bearing kit which includes the rubber support for the bearing $14-15 ( you have to measure the driveshaft to order the correct ujoints )
But you can check it yourself, just get it safely up on ramps and stick it in gear with th eparking brake on and grab the driveshaft sections and see if there is any play in the ujoints.

Also if the overdrive is acting up it can buck and jump at strange times read : http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/TransmissionManual.htm
for how to diagnose OD problems Don't forget to start by changing the oil in the transmission( atf type f ) first to elimanate that variable .

I need to ask, do you know when the timing belt was changed last on that engine? 50,000 miles max on the t-belt in these things . if the t-belt breaks, you'll have a 450 pound paper weight under the hood.
