WOW! I am new to board, its great to see a board for Volvos...Anyway my Volvo is making a GRUELING chattering under car noise in Drive or Reverse when the brake is held down and idling. When I speed up it goes away. Any ideas?

    There is a heat shield welded to the catalytic converter. When one or more of the welds rust through, you get a rattling noise. Usually occurs at some particular engine speed, that sets up a resonance in heat shield.

    You might check the condition of the transmission mount. These are not hard to change at home as long as you have a jack to support the transmission while you remove the crossmember and replace the mount.

    If it is kind of a grinding noise, it could be the water pump giving out. Grab the water pump pulley and try to move it to what would be the front and back of the car. If there is any give what so ever, the pump needs to be replaced.
