940 T Auto - should it shift this way? 900

Hi All,

I have a 95 940t auto wagon that I am still getting aquainted with. Specifically, I am not sure if this car should shift so hard. First off, when the car is traveling in the 30 - 45 mph range it will not shift up until it has passed 45 mph - no matter what. So if I am traveling at 40 - 44 mph the engine is turning at 3000 + rpm - which I think is kind of annoying. Most of the time I speed up just to force the car to shift up. Additionally, when driving around town at 30 mph I sometimes let up on the gas and let the car coast a bit. However, when pressing on the accelerator again the engine revs to 3000+ rpm before it seems to start moving the car. This is also a bit annoying. Anyway, I am just wondering if this is caused by the turbo - automatic trans combination. I test drove a couple of non-turbo 940s before I bought the turbo, and neither one of those seemed to drive like this.

Thanks in advance for any comments!

I had a 91 740 NA. Now driving 91 940T. I've only driven a couple of turbos but the torque converter always seems to be looser than in the na engine. Also, no torque converter lockup in turbo, so the connection seems looser. I like the feeling of efficiency with lock up but prefer the power of the turbo. Adjusting the kick down cable will move shift points. As we speak my cat is in the shop for a new kickdown cable. Bob

Sounds like a complete flush would help. Also check the kickdown cable. Mine had the sheath pulled out up at the top end. I think I pushed it out when I reached back in there. When I pushed the sheath back where it belonged, the tranny went back to shifting at lower RPM

It's not a problem of the engine-trans combination. How many miles do you have on that car? I would flush the transmission fluid and see if the behavior changes.

The car only has 116,000 miles - also, reverse is giving some trouble. That is, when first put in reverse it take a few seconds to engage - usually with the help of giving it some gas.

I hate to say it, mine was doing same thing, I flushed it twice, changed the valve body and added a additive from my local transmission shop. It ended up being the overrunning clutch at the back of the tranny, inside. I was able to do the work myself, but I had to pull transmission and remove the guts to get to it. Needless to say it was a lot of work for a 28.00 part.
