installing aftermarket radio 700 1991

Fellow members:

I just spent a frustrating 2 hrs. trying to install a new cd radio unit from jvc. Bought it on sale from best buy with free install. Turns out free meant 160.00 plus cost of installation kit, another 17.00! The radio cost 100.00.
I asked what is it that is exactly free in all of this. Well, you don't have to pay usual 48.00 installationn charge. Oh, so, if it was not a free installtion offer you would charge me 225.00 to install. I said no thanks, I will do it myself.

Now, I heard there was a separate amp somewhere, never found it.

I tried to connect/install this thing and finally gave up.

Can anyone who has done this give me some help!

Thanks.

If it is a 940 the amp is located up under ther steering wheel closer to the fuse panel. It is up there and is kept in place by 4 bolts. It looks like a black box with a little silver around it. BE CAREFUL NOT TO MESS WITH THE OTHE WIRES.

I installed a Pioneer radio in my car the guys at Circut City had a hard time finding it. I simply unpluged it left the wire and took out the fuse for it. I also installed two 10" subs and a Bazoka Amp rated a 750-800 watts sounds good with volvo speakers. Upgrade coming soon.

There is no magic adapter that you can buy that will allow you to just plug the new JVC right in, which is presumably why Best Buy wanted to charge you a lot for the installation.

In a nutshell, assuming that your car has the stereo with the separate amp, installing the JVC unit will require locating and removing the amp, cutting the four pairs of speaker wires from the wiring harness that goes into the amp, splicing in 3' lengths of speaker wire and running it over to the center console, and connecting 3 or 4 of the wires from the wiring harness for the Volvo radio to the harness that came with your JVC (if you want to avoid cutting those 3 or 4 wires, there is an adapter you can buy that essentially mimics the receptacle on the Volvo radio, but since we're talking about an older car and an inexpensive stereo, I don't know that it's really worth the bother).

If you didn't buy the installation kit, you're going to need to go back and get it, or look elsewhere for a Metra model 999200 (the plastic mounting ring shown in the lower left corner of p. 5 of link above). The finished installation isn't the most elegant looking thing in the world (instead of being inset in the sloping center console, the new radio sticks out from it), but I was happy to have a stereo with a working LCD display and that can play CD's and MP3 discs.

Thanks Patrick:

I have a 740.

I guess that amp is way up there. I didnt see it , but i was looking up there.

Aha. If there is an adapter harness, I guess all I need to do would be to pull it out from the amp, hook up to adapter and wire back to the radio and then the adapter end will connect to the new radio.

voila...

does that sound right.

thanks.

There should be wires in back of the radio already splice those with the wires from the head unit and there you have it. If you really want a crisp sound i would advise you to rerun all speaker wire sounds worse than it is but its fairly simply.

That does sound right. I have a 780 which has no adapter harness and 2 amps. I pulled it all out and started over...invested $42 at the local stereo shop when I found that Crutchfield had no idea how the 780 was put together. They sent me a harness that I think fits the 740/760. The local stereo shops should have them. Check with the ones that handle your brand (but be humble, they might be a little miffed that you went to Best Buy and now want them to fix things).

That's about all I can help with this. There is a web site that others have mentioned. I think it's something like installer.com...yep http://www.installer.com If you go there, you should be able to find some info for your model. I wish you the best...it will be worth it!

Blessings!
Patrick

What model is your car?

The amp is probably under the steering wheel. Remove the lower panel and you should see it up under there. If it is a 780 you have 2 amps.

If your problem is just the wiring, go to the local stereo shop and have them wire in the harness...it should cost you 40-50. There is also an adapter harness available that plugs in to the factory harness at the amp.

More detail about what your problem is might help us help you.

Blessings!
Patrick
