Anastasia and everyone Electric sunroof conversion done 700 1986

Hello I have just finished converting my crank sunroof to electric. I bought a used 1991 940 sunroof motor and motor cover and dash switch for £15 uk pounds and removed them myself with plenty of cable and all switch wiring connectors. I installed it and wired it up as in the FAQ. I removed crank + cover, then removed 2 screws that held cogs in place for old crank so as to be left with hole in which lets new motor cogs press into place on either side of chains. (view in hole and you will see a chain on either side) I could only use 2 front screw holes to secure motor as the rear one was nowhere near a screw hole as the 940 motor may be different. I then connected the brown wire from the motor with ring on to a ground at another nearby screw. I removed the drivers sun visor and clip then I removed the trim down the UK/US drivers side as it avoids removing the clovebox and is a good route for the wires. To remove the trim that goes down the side of the windscreen I removed and unscrewed the covers where a grab handle could be fitted above the drivers door and also there is a screw that needs to come out behind it so that you can carefully remove the trim that goes down the side of the windscreen from the roof down to the rubber door window heater vent. I removed it by pulling carefully and it came out well. I removed the panel under the dash/above drivers feet by turning the push clip and unscrewing the 2 screws so as to give access for a route for the wire to the switch on dash. I carefully fed the wires from the motor through the roof cavity so that I could grab them at the other end and then put them down the side of the windscreen until under the drivers floor area, I refixed all the trim by reversing the operation. I then installed the switch at the side of the rear defroster by removing the switch holder plastic by carefully prising the plastic with a flat bladed screwdriver. This removes all of the plastic around heater slide vents and removes the trim for the switches. I then pushed out the blanking plate and pushed the switch into location. I then connected the red wire from the sunroof motor to the red switch wire and did the same for the blue wire. I used electrical terminal strips to connect them together. I then earthed the switch using the black wire. I connected the yellow/white wire from the switch to a power supply. I decided not to connect or mess with the fusebox and ran a power cable through the bulkhead to a 15 Amp inline fuse holder and connected it to the + battery terminal. I inserted a fuse and tested it and the motor was buzzing so I cleaned the internal switch contacts and then WD40 the chains on the sunroof to make it glide nicely. It works really well and I think it is so much easier to use. James.

Thanks to Anastasia and James Anness for your kind comments. It wasn't that bad of a job, just time consuming. Best wishes James.

Congratulations! You should be proud of yourself. An electrically operated steel sunroof is one of the 700's greatest assets :)

Sorry it should of been yellow/ blue for the power supply. I also extended the sunroof motor electrical cables before fitting and then cut them to size after. I also lubricated the motor. James.
