I have done this on my 1986 245. I put the headrests in for my growing kids safety and did not want the headrest rods ripping through thier backs which is likely if you just drill holes and put the headrests in. I bought a used back of rear seat on ebay. The frame of the seat back is different. It has metal re-enforcement for the headrest rods. The bottom swivel on each side of the seat back is spring loaded. Put a large flat blade screwdriver against the head of the swivel pin and move it out so it releases from the body. The Latch Pins on the car need to be changed as well, try to get them with the seat. The piece of floor that lifts when the seat is open is not connected to the new seat back. These are springed hinges. I have them but haven't found them necessary. Color in not crucial.I used the cover from my old back,it fit except the release handle is a different shape and needed some carpet gluing. Its hard to get the plastic tubes out of the seat back that has the headrests. These are the holes the headrest rods slip into. They pull up but clip under the top metal edge of the seat. Pry and twist. I broke one, but volvo has them$$.I use zap straps to replace the bull clips on the bottom edge of the cover. Vinyl spray worked well to change color of rests and some small pieces. The new seat used TROX screws. Thats all I remember. This turned out to be a longer story than I expected.Good luck. Ed

Yep - don't forget those latch pins! I had to make another 50+ mile journey back to the junkyard for those.

I plucked mine's out of a '90.

Front headrest pads will fit these rear headrests too, with a little coaxing from a big screwdriver.

I have done this same installation on an 87. The biggest problem is that the seat sheet metal does not have a lower support to catch the pins from the headrest. You will have to remove the rear seat cover and add some kind of lower support. I used a piece of angle which I pop riveted to the seat back. I believe that there is a plastic insert that is installed through the top of the seat back that extends through the add on support. Make sure that you get these inserts as it makes the positioning of the support easier. They will also make it easier to slip the headrests into place. Once the support is installed, you can drill down through the folded over lip at the top of the seat back and then through the lower support. Reinstall the seat cover and install the plastic inserts. You're done! Good luck!

Kurt
