Recently (last night ) I just installed rear HD shocks and noticed that they are a bit on the soft side on my wagon. Another person over on turbobricks is also seeing this happen. Has the valving on these shocks changed recently that would explain this?
His shocks were installed on a 240 sedan, mine on my 240 SE wagon.

For about a month I ran some TC's but the clunking got my pissed off so I returned them. Using a masking tape on the shock bolt would be perfect for a shim on the bolt to make up the gap and not compress like rubber tapes.
The clunking could be an issue on your HD if they are not mounted right. Then they will rub and clunk on the trailing arm.

Hmmmmm...perhaps that's the issue as I'm only hearing it on the one side. Hopefully I'll know by tomorrow.

Yes, within the last month... and I did see that post on T-Bricks too. What kind of springs are you running? What is "soft" in your mind? What about the other critical rear components -such as bushings?
The Bilies on my car are tight as hell, but the date you bought them in no way indicates how long they were on a shelf somewhere or when they were constructed; however, that aside, I strongly believe in Bilstein quality versus any other "affordable" brand out there.
If you believe there is an issue with your Bilies get a replacement as their warranty/service is also bar none...

That's what I want to here. I just bought 2 seats within the last 2 weeks and don't need any buyers remorse. Installed the rears on my Wagon along with poly bushings and IPD sways also painted everything with POR 15. Working on the front now.

I have 25/25 ipd sways, stock springs, and the reason I brought this up is thay they feel slightly less firm then the TC's I ran for a month. The bushings in the rear could be better... both lower trailing arm bushings are kinda messed up to say the least. I will have to get an update in once I replace all my bushings with poly I got through Dale on TB's from SuperPro or something.

The SuperPro bushings are nice. If I really like the ride and put them on my Sedan I think that the front trailing arm bushings will stay. The rubber is really tight and my bushings were still fine when I replaced them. If you want a stiffer ride maybe springs will do it for you. I ordered a set of B&G's for my Sedan from planetperformance.com($210). the softer valving in the rear might be a safety factor.

Hey Kevin,
Not in the past 6 months but about a year ago...I have noticed that on the driver's side rear constantly hearing a clunk when going over bumps (been like that since last Feb). Everything back there is now new, and in the process of swapping sides to see if the actual shock is faulty. The rears for me seem pretty firm w/o sport springs on 15" rims (subjective yes). Saw the post though over on T-bricks.
Best,

I bought a pair of Bil's for the rear of my 245 about a year an a half ago, then put new ones on the front last Oct 03 (I actually had a broken Bil in front, a pair that I had from a '79 242 that lasted from '84 -91 and sat in my garage til '99 when I put them on my current '89 wagon, probably a combined 260 k miles on them!!)
In the meantime, the rear Bil's got really soft in the 1 1/2 yrs, not like the ones I got in '85. The 20 yr old front Bil that wasn't broken was much stiffer than the ones I got in October. The rear Bils are so soft now, that the rears need replacing to match the front's. The back end of the wagon bounces around noticeably.
They are not what they used to be. I am disapointed in the 30 k miles I have on the rear set but not able to be covered under a warranty because they are not actually broken.

The older shocks I think I have found out were more of a "sport" shock. They might also be a different part number. The entire issue might just be the valving has changed. These shocks are warrentied for life, and if there is EVER an issue of the shock getting to soft they will fix it. I would contact Bilstein and tell them about the shock getting really soft. Might just be that maybe the piston seal got wacky.

Do you think Bilstein would change the valving without changing the part number? I would think this would create all kinds of problems with inventory control. think of buying 2 shocks with same number but different valving.
