a/c heater fan blower motor 700 1987

The fan blower motor in my 1987 740 gle is a little noisy and I want to replace it. Is the General Motors blower motor a direct replacement? Does it come with the blower cage or do you re-use the old one? Anything I should know about removing/reinstalling it?
Thank you for your help.
Jorge

i just switched out a fan from a old parts car that I have on hand. Biggest problem I had was the 5th screw in the back by the little hose. It is hard to see and I had to go with feel to get the soccket head on to it.

This is a copy and paste of a post I found on Brickboard a while back, I don't know who posted it, so I can't credit them:

Go to the Parts Source and order a Siemens made replacement blower for a 1984 Chev Citation with the single power connection (I think the Chev with A/C had this config). The part # is: 14-7705-0 and the Siemens number is: PM-105.

The PM-105 motor assembly is identical to the OEM one and only cost $25CDN. You could ask for the Siemens made Volvo drop in replacement but the Part Source will charge you double.

Both of the Siemens motor assemblies are the same but the difference is that the fan cage comes with the Siemens made Volvo replacement. Not worth it if you can gingerly remove the cage off the OEM blower and reuse it.

    Jorge,

Yes, it's an exact fit. It's actually a Simens motor now. It looked exactly the same as the Delco one that came out of my 1988 745. Maybe Volvo got them with better bearings or something- I don't know- but for $15 and a lifetime warranty what the heck.

You can reuse your 'cage' or buy a new one for extra $$. Clean the old one as best you can being careful to not disturb the metal balancing tabs.

The FAQ's has good info on the removeal/instlation. Be careful removing the plastic trim when getting to the ECU. That plastic cover (passenger foot piece)has tabs near the middle that mate with the ECU bracket. You need to somehow slide it straight back to not break these tabs. I guess- mine broke. Double sticky tape keeps it from rattling.

And don't forget the small hose that supplies cooling air to the motor.

    Have fun,
    chuck

I replaced mine (1987 760GLE) in 2002 with the Siemens motor. It lasted a year and died summer of 2003. I replaced that one with one from NAPA. The NAPA part appears much heavier construction than the Siemens and more like the original.

I think the Siemens came with the cage. The NAPA did not so I reused the original.

DO check out the FAQ on this subject and don't forget the small hose.

      Good Luck
      Carter

Will the motor work in a 1991 744. Mine's starting to get noisy and Volvo wants way to much for the part IMHO.

As far as I know the old motor only works up to the 1989 model year. They changed the motor after this time and you will probably have to buy OEM/direct replacement with the corresponding costs associated with the name Volvo.

I'm not sure about the 1991 740s. I'd check with NAPA. The part# i got was a 655-1642. It came with the fan attached i believe and was $58 bucks.

A noisy blower fan is a pain but from what I have heard be glad you don't have a 240 with a bad fan.

"A noisy blower fan is a pain but from what I have heard be glad you don't have a 240 with a bad fan."

            I'll second that...

It took me 4 and a half days of none stop work to remove and replace the heater motor in my '80 245 DL.

            Unbelievable.
