Repair manual advice for a 960 900 1995

I need a repair manual with pictures for my recent purchase of a 1995 960.
I usually do most of the work myself if I feel I'm not over my head.
However, I don't have the OBD-1 code device (yet).
I hear the Chilton manual sucks (according to this board)and the green manual might be too much since I don't have any "volvo tools".
What about the CD-ROM I see on Ebay? Is it any good?
I'm thinking that something with good illustrations and the advice from this board will do me fine.
I'm not too cheap to fork over the $$ for the green manual or the OBD-1 device but don't want too if I don't have too.
How did you guys start out with reference material? Would you do it differently if you had the chance?

The code readout device for the '95 960 is built into the car! See the FAQ's for use instructions. I saw a copy of one of the CD's and compared it to my "green " book and found it to be pretty good. If you get it for less than $50 I would go for it. The one I looked at seemed to have copied many of the pictures and diagrams but re-wrote the text to condense it. (And may have lost some accuracy in the process.)

I have used the alldata diy service: www.ALLDATA.com/diy which costs about 25 a year but gives you access to the equivalent of a dealer service manual. They keep up with the current info on any car which is also a plus. You need good bandwidth to take advantage of it since there are alot of diagrams to download.

I use the Volvo iVadis website at volvotechinfo.com, for about $10 you can get access for 3 days to an awful lot of info. Its basically their manuals online for 1994 and later vehicles I believe. I have found it useful and relatively easy to use. Good luck.
