muffler put on backwards at midas 200

Hey i was looking at a muffler that was just replaced.....and the words inlet and an arrow point towards the tailpipe end of the exhaust system. Isn't inlet> supposed to point the otehr way way....that is isn't it supposed to point toward the front end of the cars exhaust??

well....it was the previous owner who did this work on the car. already my spark plug wires have corroded on the inside and my first muffler job fell off :)

Yes it fell off while i was driving.

The second time i took it to them....i guess they've now put the thing on backwards. Now i'm just waiting for other things to fail on me. And my cat is fine...i took it out and it's going bad...but it has a long ways to go to get there.

Inlet & Outlet Are Different Sizes 200

I haven't done an exhaust since last spring, but I don't believe the rear muffler can be reversed, without resorting to adapters.

The NAPA/Walker book shows 1 7/8" clamp for the inlet and 2" clamp for the outlet for all 240s.

I think these sizes refer to the inner part being clamped (2" pipe necked-down to 1 7/8") and a 2" muffler outlet (tail pipe expanded to fit over).

Disregard the arrow. The end marked "inlet" must receive the exhaust from the engine. Obviously, the other end is the "outlet". And tell Midaas if it didn't make any difference, then why is it marked. The only thing worse than letting Midas Touch your exhaust is letting Midas Touch your brakes (I don't know if they still do brakes but they used to). I will have to give them credit though; they played a big part in turning me into an almost 100% DIYer. jp

well heres the deal.....

first i'm never ever going to take my car to midas....

secondly...the arrow is pointing towards the tailpipe where the exhaust gas flows out....

the arrow is pointing towards the direction of gas flow.

so i really dont' know. The sound isn't all that bad but acceleration is a bit slow.

Along with Midas, we tend to have fun with Dippy, the kid at Jippy Loob. And Fram foil filters.

So, right after you learn to install your own exhaust on your 240 (really, really easy to do on that car), learn to change your own oil. And learn the right filters.

"The sound isn't all that bad but acceleration is a bit slow..."

The acceleration may just be the car. These 240s are NOT rocket ships, but they DO get there. However, depending on mileage, you might have a plugging catalytic converter -- that'll slow your car down.

One of my 240s has a Midas system, intslled by the PO, and it rattles like crazy (baffle inside a muffler).

On a 240, INLET should be on the right, where the axle pipe meets the muffler. If it's not, and it sounds like it's not, as you describe it, then Midas is a bunch of idiots.
Oh wait, Midas IS a bunch of idiots. Have them fix it correctly, and no BS about how it doesn't matter, and then never go to them again. Promise?

Those people have screwed up more exhausts on more cars than you would believe.

(The only credit that I'll give them, in this case, is that the 240 muffler is pretty easy to get backwards- it's more or less symmetrical. But if they used factory type pipes instead of bending their own, it wouldn't have fit the pipes.)

"...the 240 muffler is pretty easy to get backwards..."

Rob, is it possible that Midas hires kids who don't understand "inlet"?

Oh, wait, you said, "Midas IS a bunch of idiots..."

That explains it.

I guess you don't get what you don't pay for in this world.

I would suggest that they had at least a 50% chance of doing it right and they still screwed it up! When I need camera stuff I find the little local camera shop owned by Jim, when my computer needs love I go to the little local computer shop across the street owned by Dan, when I need a bolt I go to the little local hardware store owned by Syl and when my 242 needed exhaust work I took it to the little local muffler shop owned by Stan. I am more comfortable dealing with the little guys and the big corps are suspect.

The arrow tells you which way the exhaust should flow. It's not directing you to the inlet side. Sounds like it's on correct if it points towards the tailpipe.
