headlight lens 200 1987

I want to replace the ugly yellow lenses on my headlights and came across this at VLVworld.com:
"Headlight lens only, LEFT driver side. Requires that you cut off the old one and glue in this replacement. Cheap but more work."

Instead of over a hundred dollars for the entire assembly they sell you just the lens for about $35. Has anyone done this and had success? Does it seem like a reasonable price for $35 for each side.

Or for the same amount of time and about a .50 cent investment in sand paper and polishing compound you can bring the headlamps back to their shiny original shape (albeit w/a yellow tint).
I'd first go to the boneyard and search for a couple of nice headlamps. They're usually about $5-10 each.

Is the discoloration all on the outside of the lens or is it necessary to take them off and clean the inside of the lens also?

The yellow is all on the outside. I've used the oven cleaner with good success. If hte lens is pitted and scratched though, it'll still be a bit cloudy and require polishing. I think $35 is worth it for these lenses- I've pulled quite a few of these apart without even meaning to. The factory glue is always dried out and brittle. Clear silicone RTV seems to work well for me. Some say the fumes will attack the reflector surface; I've had no trouble with it myself.
If the lens was a fish tank at some point due to severe water intrusion, then there could be some brown or green inside... again the lens could be pulled off to clean this or this could be cleaned with a rag-on-a-stick through the lamp hole.

I did this with my 240, it is very easy to do, and I sure think its worth it. You take off the headlight capsule, then take a utility knife and run it along the seam where the lens is glued to the reflector assembly (the glue is likely to be fairly dry, anyway). Take off the lens and clean up most of the old glue off the reflector pan (note: do not try to clean the reflector itself except with plain water, as you can take off the "reflectivity" with some cleansers). Use a clear silicone type sealant/glue, running a small bead all the way around the reflector, then assembling the lens onto the relfector pan. Make sure that it is even and that the glue had spread through the entire seam (to keep water out). I put some rubber bands around the assembly and let it dry overnight. Pop 'em back in the next day. Looks great.

    Hope this helps.

If they are new lenses for $35 that doesn't seem too bad. I have a pair that was slightly yellow and I bought the cleaner/restorer sold by IPD and they look much better.

Some people have had good results with oven cleaner and a fine Brillo Pad. Other have tried car wax/rubbing compounds with a Brillo Pad and it has brought some of the yellow out. I'm glad I do not have to put up with that setup. I'm very happy with the quad-square headlight setup my 246GL came with. Good Luck!

    Sincerely,

It sounds to me like more trouble than it's worth, the lenses in your current lights might be able to be brought back to life by a cut back with a mild car wax to cut the grime off them. this works well with glass or polycarbonate lenses. I used to do this alot to bring back Ford Taurus and Mondeo headlamps when they yellowed.
    Just an idea...
