Caliper Rebuild 200

Has anyone had luck rebuilding calipers. Fcpgroton seals a kit for both front calipers for $19. During the rebuild of my front suspension found that one of the outer rubber seals is damaged.

FYI, I recently bought the caliper rebuild kit from FCP expecting Girling parts, but I got ScanTech. Turned out my problem wasn't seized pistons, which is good since I wasn't too thrilled about using ScanTech parts on my brake system.

If you're sure the pistons and bores are not corroded, then go ahead and replace the seals and piston rings. If the pistons and bores are slightly discolored, clean them up with a medium or fine Scotch-brite pad, and make sure all surfaces are scrupulously clean afterward. I use spray brake cleaner, followed by a lint-free white cloth, then a liberal finger-wipe with clean brake fluid.

It's really helpful getting the pistons out using shop air, just remember to but a hunk of wood between the pistons, and keep your fingers out of the way! Those pistons come flying out with a vengeance.

Sorry to keep tagging on to your posts, Smitty, but I was gonna mention, when "shop air" fails, a grease gun prevails. 'Course there's a little matter of cleanup... Can't recall using an adapter -- I think that thread was correct or darned close. Junkyard calipers.

No prob, Art... I'd do the same. Actually, I like your grease gun idea... compressed air in even small volumes has a lot of potential energy. Notice in my post I said "keep your fingers out of the way?" Well... on the 850 wifemobile I had to pop the single piston out to re-seat the dust seal. A quick puff of shop air in the lab at work and OWWWWWWWWW!!! Not as bad as a hammer whack, but a real attention-getter. Too soon old, too late smart.

Ouch. I've used the same little hunk of 3/4" plywood for a while. The pistons can leave some deep impressions looking like someone used a bit too much zeal on a hammer. The damage to the wood is a good reminder to keep my mitts outta there. Also have a large fender washer covered with inner-tube patch to plug the opposite cylinder. So the grease gun came out when 100# of air refused to budge one in particular. Have to be careful with grease too, I hear an inadvertent injection is painful. All too often I do something painful, and realize how close it came to being permanent.

Two plaques in my dad's dad's stairway: Too soon oldt; too late schmardt. Everything I like is illegal, immoral or fattening.

Yes.I got a rebuild kit and removed the pistons and soaked them for a day in brake parts cleaner along with the caliper.I took some fine emery cloth and cleaned up the caliper bores and pistons. Then I libed the pistons with brake fluid and slid them back into the caliper. The most challenging part was getting part was getting the dust boot on.
