Bilstein Rear Shock Mounts Rattle 200

I have installed a pair of Bilstein Touring shocks on the rear of my 85 245 and as others have reported they do not fit very well and rattle. What have others done to quiet this annoying rattle? What should I use to shim the top mount for the rear shocks to keep them from making noise? Thanks Dan

I installed the Bilsteins HD shocks and the same thing happened. I have another set of HD shocks in the garage that I removed awhile ago because of the same reason[ I thought they had repaired this problem]. When I contacted Bilstein and E-shoxs about the problem they told me I had to measure the opening of the shock sleeve, the thickness of the shock bolt, the diameter of the opening for the shock bolt, etc, etc.I did not and still do not have measuring tools for this, dial caliper. So right now I live with the noise.I told them about the problem and they said as soon as I give them the info THEN they will help me.Maybe this summer I will get the stupid caliper and take some measurements. Let me know what you find out.

Before I just exchanged them for Bilstein HD's.... I was going to use a masking tape wrapped around the shock bolt to shim the extra space. The nice thing about the masking tape is that the fibers inside it wouldn't compress, and would be fine exposed to the wet stuff.

I have heard others talk about using masking or duct tape to sure up the sleeve... even though it is a ghetto solution... the problem will be resolved. Surely, you could go to your local machine shop and get some sleeves made cheap.

    Peace, Jon

Personally I think Bilstein should send out the proper sleeve or bushings to fix this. I would call them. This seems to be a well documented problem.

        Dan,

I was just looking for your email address..... just pulled off the Boges again. The rattle on them is ar the bottom bolt, with the top tight. I will try aluminum tape today and let you know how it works.

By the way, with three new ujoints, a new center bearing assembly, and a transmission mount, I've made some progress. This weekend the tape, next the motor mounts. Thanks again for the advice.

        David
