I Failed Inspections b/c of My Brake Lights

I have a 1987, 740GLE. I failed inspections b/c my brake lights stay on (not the window one) when the car is just parked and idle. Once I tap on the brake lights the back window light comes on -- which is what it's suppose to do. So there basically is no difference when I tap the brakes if I'm parked b/c the brake lights are already on (except the window light comes on). Of course, the brakes work as they should when the car is moving. I was told by the service station inspection person that the brake lights should not be on when the car is parked.

I'm trying to avoid going back to the same service station that gave me the inspection. My feeling is that they have a vested interest in failing people. I live in VA, by the way. Has anyone had this problem? Your advice is appreciated. Also, a good referral in the northern virginia area would be welcomed. My old mechanic has moved his shop, and I can't find him. Thanks. Jennifer

Shouldn't The Brake Lights Stay On...?

After carefully looking at the writing on my "reject sticker," I realize that he rejected me b/c my brake lights stay on when my parking lights are on. He wrote "brake lights won't turn off when parking lights are on." Isn't this normal?!! Again, I have a 740 GLE, 1987.

I could not find anything in my manual to verify this. If he's wrong, how can I prove it? Any books or anything I can copy from the library. I'm at a loss. And very frustrated! Thanks again. Jennifer

I'm a little confused. Are you saying your brake lights are always on? Brake lights should only be illuminated when you hit the brakes- otherwise, what's the point?

I agree that you could check the rear fog lights- every Volvo has these though most people rarely use them. This would be a bright light in the upper half of the lamp housing. Your brake lights are combined with the lower, outer parking light on each side.
If you pull the lamp covers in the trunk you should see a large white socket on one side (ought to be the right) and a black one in the opposite spot on the left. Check these bulbs and clean the contacts on the socket with a nail file or sandpaper.
If the copper contact areas on the blue taillight circuit board are black/green/crusty/white then clean them GENTLY with a pencil eraser.
IF the taillight housing seems full of water, dry it out. A small cordless drill (1/8 or smaller bit) can be used to make a hole in the outer bottom corner of the lamp housing to drain out the lights- sedan lights frequently get water in them, causing all sorts of problems.
If you need new bulbs, the bulb is an 1157 and should be commonly available anywhere. Clear or amber will work- clear is a little brighter.
If it seems that the bulbs are good, sockets not full of water, but still no lower brake lights, you have a bad "bulb failure" sensor. It's a big red cylindrical relay that lives in the dashboard, in front of your fuses. You can pull it out if you remove the cig lighter, snap the square trim off the lighter opening, remove 2 screws on the left and pull out the coin tray over the ashtray. The red bulb failure relay just unplugs. Get a new one from a junkyard, or if you can do soldering, pry it open and repair the burnt connection inside (it's kind of fine work!). A junkyard unit is probably $10 or less- the dealer price is 1 arm and 1 leg.
Good luck!!

Are your rear fog lights on? It is the rocker switch with the red pilot light just to the right of the light switch.
