Hello all I was offered a 1980 242gt today. I would like your opinion on the price. The car has been in storage for the last 12 years, has 102000 miles, original paint,though it needs a repaint as the paint is faded and sun burnt interior in great shape, engine turns but wont start(12 year old gas = 0 octane).
Not having restored any 240's, where should i look for rust?(I am in Canada after all) What made the gt special, badges and paint or was it a better handling 240?

Yvan,

A GT is a rare car, but the 80 is the least desirable as Volvo softened up the suspension on that year. 78's can 79's all came with thicker sway bars, reinforcing plates in the front strut towers plus upper and lower tie bars that all dissapeared with the 1980 model. Not to say that it isn't a neat car. 80 GT's all had sunroofs, most of them had A/C and a lot of them had all the options like cruise and power windows. Rust would be found on rockers, floor boards, wheel arches and the famous desintagrating spare tire wells in the back.

Not running, needing a full body job plus the PITA of finding a correct set of GT stripes (not the ones on eBay) makes it no more valuable than your average 24 year old car. Make sure it has the original Virgo wheels as well. 2 to 3 hundred dollar car if that much.

Is it being offered to you for free or a reasonable price?
I would be interested in obtaining that car.
They are everything that the previous poster said...nothing extremely special, but to a volvo person they are a lot of fun.

I just read your post again...I am an idiot, I guess you have the option to BUY it. I got ahead of myself there. I think you could pick it up for under 1000 bucks. I would shoot closer to 500 or less. I would look for rust around the wheel wells, window trim, and under carriage. You should be in good shape...just get that engine running again and you will have a slick car.

Not an Idiot just an enthusiast. The seller is asking 700 canadian, roughly 500us. I too assume old volvo's that have been put aside are free, or close to it. My 745 i picked up for 250 canadian, did the brakes(all used parts I had in stock), the po had worn not only the pads away but also the steel backing plates, brakes consisted of the caliper pistons rubbing on the discs, not a good sound. Since then I have put 15000kms on the car with only oil changes to add to the bill. This is cheap transportation at it's best.

My only knowledge of the 80 GT is that
1. engine was standard 2.1 that year, no turbo
2. all were silver, 2 door coupes with red/orange body stripes
3. all had black cloth interior with orange piping on seats and dash
4. might have had slightly larger sway bars, front and rear.
5. virgo mag wheels (turbo wheels) standard
overall nice cars, pretty rare now...
